Many people believe that preparing this dish at home is not easy and such skill requires patience and skill. In fact, everything is simpler than that. Fresh vegetables are wrapped in a sheet of pita bread along with juicy fried meat and delicious sauce. However, now you will find out everything yourself...

Classic chicken shawarma recipe at home

Today we have a big “Royal” shawarma according to the classic recipe. From the provided ingredients you get 2 massive shawarma, which you can eat for the rest of the day. After all, even despite its size, the dish is very filling. There is meat, vegetables and bread (lavash). Therefore, they can easily replace a full meal.

Ingredients:

  • 2 pita breads;
  • favorite greens;
  • 1 chicken breast;
  • 200 grams of cabbage;
  • 1 carrot;
  • 1 sweet pepper;
  • 1 cucumber;
  • 1 tomato;
  • salt and pepper to taste;
  • 200 grams of cheese.

For the sauce:

  • 3 cloves of garlic;
  • 150 grams of light mayonnaise;
  • salt and pepper;
  • a tablespoon of tomato paste;
  • 100 grams of sour cream.

Step-by-step description of the recipe:

1. Divide the breast into 2 parts and marinate in salt and ground pepper. You can also use special chicken seasoning. Let it brew for about 20-30 minutes. After this, the pieces need to be fried in vegetable oil on both sides.

Meat is an important ingredient in shawarma and it has its own requirements. It must be juicy. Therefore, you should not overcook the meat. Lightly frying is enough. The degree of readiness can be easily determined by piercing a piece with the tip of a knife. If no red juice comes out, the breast is ready.

2. Make cabbage salad with carrots. Salt it and mash it with your hands.

3. For the sauce, you need to crush the garlic in a press and combine it with all other products for it. Mix thoroughly until a soft pink mass is obtained.

4. Cut the pepper into thin strips.

5. Cut the cucumbers into strips. Tomatoes in neat pieces.

6. Chop the greens.

7. While we were preparing the vegetables, the chicken had already cooled down. Now you need to cut it into pieces of any size and shape (as you like).

8. Spread half of the pita bread with a generous layer of sauce. On it, sticking to one edge, slightly retreating from the ends, place the filling in any order. Sprinkle with grated cheese.

Let me remind you that we are preparing 2 large shawarmas! You can also prepare several medium or small ones. When laying out the filling, do not forget to divide it into portions.

9. Roll the pita bread into a roll. To do this, fold the top edge and begin folding the filling, constantly folding the top part. As a result, you will end up with a roll with one free side.

10. Fry the shawarma on both sides until lightly browned and crunchy, without oil. It is better to use a grill pan for this.

You can eat shawarma either hot or wait until it cools down.

Now you have seen for yourself that preparing everyone’s favorite oriental dish is easy. If desired, you can prepare a sauce for serving. I make it from mayonnaise, garlic and kefir with the addition of herbs. Very tasty - you'll lick your fingers!

Making your loved ones happy is always a pleasure! I wish you delicious masterpieces and success in all your endeavors! See you again soon!

Sometimes, when passing by a shawarma stall, one’s mouth waters from the aroma. However, the conditions under which it is prepared and from what it is prepared only causes a strong feeling of disgust. This is not the first time I’ve made homemade chicken shawarma and I can safely say that its taste is in no way inferior to its street counterpart.

So let's get started...

Boil chicken breasts in salted water until cooked.

Chop or finely chop the finished chicken breast fillets. If desired, the chicken fillet can be fried.

Chop the cabbage into thin strips (the thinner the better) and mash with your hands.

Cut the tomato into small cubes. You can also pour boiling water over the tomato, peel the skin and use only the pulp.

Grate the carrots on a medium grater.

Finely chop the pickled or pickled cucumbers.

Making sauce for homemade chicken shawarma is very simple. To do this, mix in a bowl: sour cream, mayonnaise. Squeeze or finely chop the garlic and add it to the mayonnaise bowl. Mix all ingredients.

Spread the pita bread on the table and place 1 spoon of prepared garlic sauce on it.

Rub the sauce over the surface of the pita bread with a spoon, as shown in the photo.

Wrapping shawarma is very simple: fold the two edges as in the photo, and then roll it into a roll.

As a result, you should get shawarma, as in this photo. The top can be decorated with another spoonful of sauce and served to everyone.

Homemade chicken shawarma is ready. Bon appetit!

I love the classic versions of shawarma and this technology is just that, it’s easy and affordable, everyone can do it. Be sure to bookmark this page so that you don’t have to search quickly to click and do it.

We will need:

  • chicken breasts - 2 pcs.
  • cucumber – 140 g
  • tomato - 1-2 pcs.
  • Chinese or white cabbage - 100 g
  • parsley - to taste
  • garlic - 4 cloves
  • potatoes -1-2 pcs.
  • Korean carrots – 120 g
  • cheese - 140 g
  • Armenian lavash - 3 leaves
  • sour cream 15-20% - 90 ml
  • spices: paprika, ground coriander, suneli hops, chicken set, ground black pepper, preferably freshly ground - to taste
  • salt - to taste
  • vegetable oil for frying chicken and potatoes
  • chili sauce - to taste

Cooking method:

1. The chicken fillet will need to be washed in running water, then very thinly cut lengthwise into pieces using a kitchen knife, so that when frying everything will be well fried.

2. Then take a special garlic grater, or if not, then take a garlic press, grate this fragrant vegetable directly onto the chopped pieces of chicken pulp.

3. Now you need to add your favorite spices, the aroma will be so salivating. Namely, seasoning for chicken, just ground fresh black pepper, and one tablespoon of vegetable oil so that the spices disperse well. Using your hands, mix the chicken with this marinade on all sides and let it sit for 20-30 minutes.

Important! Don’t forget to add salt; it’s better to under-salt than to over-salt.

4. Make a special filling, to do this, mix sour cream and kefir in a cup, stir.

5. Grate one clove of garlic on a fine grater.

6. Add half a teaspoon of suneli hops, a little more than half a teaspoon of paprika, and add a little coriander and freshly ground pepper. Whisk this mixture until everything is well dissolved and dispersed.

Important! Don't forget to add some hellish chili pepper, if you don't like the heat, you don't have to add it. And also add salt to taste.

If you don’t like this type of sauce, then you can easily make another one, to do this, take a look at my article here, there are a lot of interesting, and most importantly tasty, accessible and cheap options.

8. The next main step is to fry the potato wedges with vegetable oil in a frying pan until beautifully golden brown, so that you get French fries.

9. Then fry the chicken pieces, also in a frying pan, so that there is a crispy yellow crust on both sides. After all, for this dish this is exactly the kind of crust it should be. Afterwards, place the pieces on a paper napkin to cool and drain off all excess fat.

Important! Fry over low heat so that nothing burns.

10. Now prepare the vegetable salad for the shawarma, take the greens and the rest of the washed vegetables.

11. Cut the cucumber into strips, chop the cabbage with a knife to make it look like shavings. Everything should be cut in the same style. Cut the tomatoes into thin slices and then into strips.

12. Place all this in a clean, wiped dry bowl. Chop the parsley for aroma, stir carefully so that the juice does not release.

13. Now bring the chicken “to mind.” The aroma is simply indescribable! Chop the chicken meat finely into tiny pieces.

14. It’s the turn of lavash, how to wrap shawarma correctly? There are many options, in the last article I shared with you, here I will show you the most common method. So, put the leaf on the table and grease it at the bottom, as shown in the picture, with a special sauce, about 1-2 spoons, which should already be ready.

15. Layer the ingredients one by one, starting with the vegetable mixture: cabbage, cucumbers and tomatoes.

16. Afterwards, French fries, cooled and very spicy. Next, carrots in Korean. Drizzle lightly with sauce.

17. Distribute the third part of the chopped meat evenly over the entire area.

18. Grate the cheese on a coarse grater. Pour the filling carefully using a teaspoon.

19. Well, now, without sudden movements, roll our fragrant delicacy into a roll, first bend the sides.

20. Take your time, you will succeed.

You should have three of these chicken treats.

21. Place on a grill pan, brush a little with refined vegetable oil and fry on both sides until beautifully baked. Looks great and wonderful!

Important! Place seam side down on the pan first.

22. Well, what do you like, and what is the smell of the house?!, it’s simply amazing, such a beautiful picture, those who like crispy things will need to put it in their tummy right away. Because it is recommended to use it immediately and not let it sit, as this will make it soft. 😉

Features of cooking

There are no special secrets on how to make shawarma at home - all ingredients can be selected and combined depending on personal preferences. However, attention should be paid to some important aspects: the peculiarities of marinating meat, preparing the sauce and choosing a good pita bread. The main seasonings used in shawarma are: cardamom, paprika, turmeric, curry and different types of peppers. Sometimes black coffee or cinnamon is added, but some people don't stop there and look for new sources of flavor.

The main advantage of cooking doner at home is its safety for health. Unfortunately, not all fast food stalls comply with sanitary standards. Therefore, after eating shawarma in an unfamiliar place, various stomach diseases may occur, such as poisoning, heartburn or gastritis. A home-prepared snack made from fresh and thoroughly washed ingredients will help avoid any health problems, as well as reduce the amount of excess calories for the body.

How to marinate meat

The main filling of shawarma is meat. It can be anything: chicken, pork, lamb or turkey. It is advisable to marinate the meat before cooking so that it acquires a soft, pleasant taste. To do this, you need to rub it with your favorite spices, sprinkle with herbs, and place chopped onion rings on top. Add vinegar if desired and pour dry wine (white) for one hour. After preparing the doner mixture, you need to leave it in the refrigerator for one hour until it thickens.

How to properly wrap in pita bread

Before wrapping the shawarma, you need to choose the right pita bread. It should be dense, elastic and bend well. It is important to choose pita bread that is not dry, without cracks, so that it does not break and the filling does not fall out or the sauce does not leak out. Armenian thin lavash is often used, but doner can also be made in pita bread. Homemade shawarma is wrapped like this:

  1. Unroll the pita bread on a hard, flat surface.
  2. Apply specially prepared sauce.
  3. With a slight indentation at the bottom, place the ingredients closer to either edge of the pita bread.
  4. Start folding the pita bread on the side where the filling is located.
  5. Give it a few turns so that the ingredients are completely wrapped in the pita bread.
  6. Fold the bottom and top edges of the pita bread over the filling.

Shawarma in pita

Delicious homemade shawarma

Considered fast food in Europe, shawarma is actually a traditional food in eastern countries. Even the ancient Arabs wrapped finely chopped grilled meat in a piece of flat unleavened bread (pita or pita bread). They added salads and sauces to it, turning shawarma into a complete dish.

Today, this snack is often sold on the streets, where it is popular due to its cheapness and ease of consumption.

Ingredients and methods for preparing shawarma

You can use any meat for shawarma: lamb, beef, chicken, pork. It is the main component of the dish. The remaining ingredients (vegetables, sauces, additives) may vary depending on seasonality and taste preferences.

In public fast food outlets, cucumber, tomato, onion, and cabbage are often added to chicken meat. Cheese and mushrooms can also be components of shawarma. Instead of traditional sauces, it is flavored with mayonnaise and ketchup.

The usual preparation of shawarma comes down to vertically frying the meat, cutting all the ingredients and rolling them into pita bread. According to the rules, meat should be cooked on a vertical grill. Threaded on a spit, it rotates around an axis and is evenly fried on all sides. The finished top pieces of meat are cut off in a thin layer and then finely chopped.

Calorie content: how many calories are in shawarma

This nutritious dish does not belong to the category of dietary. The average number of calories in it is from 240 to 290 kcal per 100 g. The selected meat, vegetable additives, and special sauces directly affect how many calories the shawarma will contain.

The most dietary appetizer will be chicken breast with vegetables and low-fat sauce - 150-170 kcal.

Features of recipes in different countries

There are many recipes for making shawarma, so there is no definite answer on how to cook shawarma correctly. Each country has long brought its own culinary traditions to this dish.

Azerbaijanis usually serve sweet and sour white sauce with shawarma, pouring fat tail fat over the pita bread. In Israel, there are no dairy additives at all, and the favorite seasonings are pickled mango, hummus, and sesame sauce.

In Mexico, shawarma meat is marinated in a spicy red pepper sauce. And the Germans often use minced sausage roasted on a spit instead of pieces of meat.

The simplicity of preparing shawarma contributes to its street sales in large volumes. However, rancid or burnt meat, store-bought sauces, and low-quality vegetables can ruin any snack. But to fully enjoy this juicy and tasty dish, it’s easier to make shawarma at home. It will turn out to be much cheaper, safer and tastier than any street option.
