Half human life passes in a dream, which is why it is so important to arrange for yourself convenient place for relaxation. You can buy a good bed in a store, but it is better to make it yourself, taking into account your wishes regarding dimensions or materials. This is relevant, because furniture manufacturers have not been pampering customers with low prices lately.

Features of making beds with your own hands

The development of the future double bed begins:

  • from preparation of materials;
  • searching for tools;
  • determining dimensions;
  • creating a drawing.

Each of these factors needs to be taken into account special attention, since the correct choice determines how comfortable the bed will be in the future, and how well it will perform its, albeit simple, functions. It’s easy to assemble a double bed with your own hands, the main thing is to follow all the instructions and buy the necessary elements. Then it will look like in the photos of glossy furniture magazines.

The first thing you need to do is determine the dimensions of the future double bed. The most important factor is the mattress, the dimensions of which are dictated by European standards - 160 by 200 centimeters. This nuance should be taken into account when determining the dimensions of the bed. Another detail is the size of the room where the bed will be located. If the room allows you to install basic double-sized furniture without constraint, then take this standard as a basis.

It is better to make a double bed with your own hands from pine or spruce. The board should be dried and free of knots (so as not to waste time and money on sanding). The wood for the frame must be of high quality. The legs can be made from second-rate material, and the slats that support the mattress are taken as simple as possible. For beauty and greater convenience, you can upholster the tree with fabric with foam rubber inside. For a homemade double bed you need the following tools:

  • roulette;
  • drill;
  • wood glue;
  • square;
  • iron corners;
  • self-tapping screws (30, 50, 60 mm) or nails;
  • screwdriver;
  • varnish (acrylic);
  • stain;
  • brushes;
  • sandpaper.

How to make a double bed with your own hands

If you make a double bed yourself, then you can come up with different variations of its design. For example, it may have drawers for storing pillows/blankets. Some find it more convenient to hide the laundry inside (under the base). It happens that people make transformable beds or bunk beds for themselves. There are many options, but the main thing is imagination and the ability to work with tools. Let's look at several types of beds that you can make with your own hands.

How to make a bed with your own hands from wood

To make a frame (calculation for standard double beds), you will need the following set of lumber:

  • 50x50 mm (2.6 m) – 2 pcs.;
  • 25x75 mm (2 m) – 12 pcs.;
  • 50x150 mm (2.6 m) – 5 pcs.;
  • 100x100 mm (2.6 m) – 2 pcs.

The frame is assembled very simply (make sure that the length of the bed base is slightly longer than the mattress):

  1. Cut boards 150x50 thick into blanks: two for the length of the bed, three for the width.
  2. Connect the sides of the bed (transverse) with boards (longitudinal).
  3. Secure everything with screws/glue.
  4. The base for the cross boards is cut out of 50x50 mm beams and fastened so that the niche for the mattress has a depth of 3 cm.
  5. 25x75 mm boards corresponding to the width of the frame are placed on the frame. Secure with screws.
  6. Lastly, the boards are installed on the headboard.
  7. Take a beam with a section of 100x100 and cut it to make legs (compare the dimensions with your drawings).
  8. Cut grooves in the legs for fastenings on both sides.
  9. At the ends of one side of each leg, chamfer 1 cm.
  10. Attach the frame to the legs with self-tapping screws and make sure the structure is strong.
  11. Cover with varnish and stain, let dry.
  12. Place a mattress on top, and a standard DIY double bed is made and ready for use.

Double bed with chipboard drawers

For this double bed design, there are no legs, and to the main frame described above, transverse boards are added in height from the floor to the mattress. In addition, it is necessary to purchase wide sheets of chipboard for drawers and accessories for them. The headboard and back of the bed need to be increased to the height of the legs. How to assemble such a double bed:

  1. Make a frame by connecting the side parts with the back (the boards are attached to such a height that the drawers fit under them).
  2. Place the frame vertically and secure two transverse boards (one long and one wide) with self-tapping screws and corners, forming a cross in the center of the bed.
  3. On the inside, mount spars that will support the mattress structures (a wide sheet of chipboard or slats measuring 20x80x100 mm).
  4. Build boxes from chipboard according to the drawing - to the size of the under-bed recesses. Attach hardware with small wheels to the lower outer sides.
  5. Place fasteners (metal guides along which the roll-out boxes will slide back into the grooves) at the bottom of the inner sides of the cross boards.

Double bed with lifting mechanism made of solid wood

Mechanism with which you can easily lift top part beds with mattress – very convenient thing. Into the cavity inside sleeping place hide bed linen, use it for other items that you want to hide from view. The assembly is practically no different from the version with boxes. There is one caveat - special lifting mechanisms are installed under the mattress mesh. As with the drawers, the stock does not have legs. How to assemble a double bed from solid wood with your own hands:

  1. Mount the frame as described in the second option.
  2. Assemble the lifting part from a frame with five jumpers connecting the lower and upper bars.
  3. For reliability, fasten the bars together with corners (make holes and connect with bolts).
  4. Screw the lifting mechanism to the bottom of the frame in a compressed state.
  5. Place the frame on the base of the stock and screw the second side of the mechanism to the lower spar.
  6. Make a large chipboard box the size of the under-bed niche.

Assembly diagram for a double transformable bed

It happens that there is not much space in the room at all - this is where a transforming bed comes in handy. When folded, it looks like an ordinary wardrobe, and if you pull the upper part of the structure, a full-fledged double bed appears. How to make such a place to sleep with your own hands:

  1. Start making a wall box from two load-bearing boards 2.1 m long.
  2. Fasten them (with screws and PVA glue) at the bottom with a 1.7 m long cross board.
  3. Place another fastener at the top of the structure on the back side of the supporting posts.
  4. Install exactly the same board at the top of the structure, only in front.
  5. Place the end board, thereby securing the top of the stock.
  6. Make the folding part of the product, on which the mattress will be located, from sheets of thick plywood, secured at the edges with wide boards.
  7. Fasten both parts of the bed with special fasteners, which are sold at any furniture store.
  8. For convenience, it is recommended to place fasteners on top of the supporting box, which will secure (prevent the product from opening) in the assembled state.

DIY children's bed at home

For children, especially if there are two of them in the family, it would be better to make a bunk bed with your own hands. From leftover fittings and wood, you can build a toy house for dolls that children will play with. A two-tier bed is made very simply:

  1. Measure children's mattresses and add two centimeters to the future frame.
  2. Beams measuring 100x50 mm (6 pieces - two of them are cut in half) need to be secured with screws, so that you get two frames for a bunk bed.
  3. Attach a 150x20 mm board to the end of the base of the bed and the other side.
  4. A 200x20 mm side is also placed on the second frame.
  5. Make legs from 100x50 mm bars.
  6. Install supports in the corners of the lower frame to support the upper bed.
  7. Cut a sheet of high-rigidity plywood to the size of the frames and lay the mattresses.
  8. Make boards on the top tier from planks and attach a ladder.

When the need arose to add another sleeping place at the dacha, it was decided at the family council that it would be a double bed. The dimensions of 1.6 by 2.0 meters were determined for a reason, but because this is a very common mattress size (the same in a city apartment) and purchasing it will not cause problems. This is how it turned out later.

I will make a double bed according to my drawings and, of course, with my own hands. I will carry out the installation directly at the installation site, having previously prepared all the details.
The article turned out to be voluminous and detailed, so be patient.

If you are planning to make such a double bed with your own hands, then below you will find details, drawings with dimensions, photographs, as well as a 3D model of this bed.

Since the project is quite complex, you need to prepare tools and materials before starting work.

Tools

  • Circular saw.
  • Drill.
  • Drill set.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Jigsaw or wood saw.
  • Grinding machine.
  • Construction corner.
  • Clamps.
  • Roulette.
  • Pencil.
  • Spatula.

Materials

  • Beam 100*100*330 mm – 4 pcs. (bed legs).
  • Board 195*45*1690 mm – 4 pcs. (front - back frame board and headboard).
  • Board 95*45*1690 mm – 1 pc. (head of the bed).
  • Board 195*45*2000 mm – 2 pcs. (side boards of the frame).
  • Board 95*45*1400 mm – 2 pcs. (inner front and rear frame boards).
  • Board 95*45*1800 mm – 2 pcs. (internal side boards of the frame).
  • Board 95*45*1910 mm – 1 pc. (internal longitudinal board of the frame).
  • Lamella for bed (820*63*8 mm bent plywood) – 24 pcs.
  • Overhead lamella holders, adjustable (for lamella 63*8 mm) – 48 pcs.
  • Birch dowel 10x50 (30 pcs)
  • Steel corner 50*50 mm – 12 pcs.
  • Self-tapping screws 5*80 mm – 150 pcs. (for assembling bed parts).
  • Self-tapping screws 3.5*35 mm – 50 pcs. (for fastening steel angles).
  • Self-tapping screws 3.5*12 mm – 100 pcs. (for attaching lath holders).
  • Carpenter's glue.
  • Wood putty.

Based on materials:

As a result, I bought 2 boards 195*45*6000 mm and 2 boards 95*45*6000 mm. All boards are dry and planed.
I cut it to size on site in the store (for a fee), so all the materials fit into the trunk of my car with the rear seats folded down.
As a result, I “killed” two birds with one stone: my boards were cut exactly to size and I saved on delivery.
I had a piece of 100*100 mm timber left over from building a barn and that is why I decided to use it to make bed legs. You can use any other material as legs.

Look for lamellas (armor), as well as lath holders, in specialized stores or online stores; in ordinary construction hypermarkets they are rarely available and, if available, they are in a small assortment.

By size:

Using basic dimensions to suit the desired mattress size (mine is 2000*1600*180 mm), you can change the dimensions to those that are convenient for you. For example, the height of the bed legs or the height of the side boards.
The only thing that is not worth it is to reduce the thickness of the internal longitudinal board (45 mm), which divides the bed in half, because this value is determined by the seating position of the batten holders on one side and the other.

Bed assembly: diagrams and dimensions

So, if all the tools are prepared and the materials are cut to size, then you can start assembling the bed. And let's start, of course, with the base frame.

Frame making

We begin assembly with the main boards and legs of the bed, fastening them together with self-tapping screws.

Using clamps, we fix the legs to the side boards. We drill holes in the boards - the diameter of the drill should correspond to the diameter of the screw. Don't forget to countersink the holes for the screw head.

The side and central boards should be mounted 10 mm lower, because Lat holders with lamellas will be installed on them. The photo below shows why this needs to be done.

Before assembly, I coated all the parts with wood glue and for reliability (there is no such thing as too much reliability), I reinforced all the corners in the joints of the bed frame with steel corners. You can see it in the photo below.

Under the middle board for reinforcement, I made and installed a stand leg from a piece of timber. You can use any other design, for example, make it from scrap boards or buy a ready-made cylindrical one made of metal if you find one that fits the size.

Puttying and sanding the frame

Now that the bed frame is basically ready, you can start refining appearance, namely to puttying of mounting holes, as well as other visible wood defects. To do this, use a special wood putty.

Apply the first layer of putty, trying to fill the holes as much as possible, leave to dry, following the manufacturer's recommendations on the packaging.

Important! Don’t try to putty all the problem areas the first time - it still won’t work. Correctly puttying should be done in 2-3 stages, with intermediate drying and abrasive treatment.

Sand the dried putty with sandpaper and a coarse abrasive, for example P80. I used an orbital sander with velcro abrasive pads. You can sand with a piece of sandpaper on a flat block, but this is more labor-intensive.

After blowing off the remaining dust, apply a second layer of putty and repeat the drying-grinding stage.

Finally, we sand the entire surface of the frame to a pleasant smoothness. First with abrasive P80 and then with a finer abrasive P120-180. Of course, there was a lot of dust...

While the putty is drying, we don’t waste time - you can start making the headboard, if of course you need it. Below I will tell you how I did it.

Assembling the backboard for the headboard

Since the double bed turned out to be quite heavy, I decided to make the backrest removable, in case the bed needed to be moved to another room.

For the headboard, you can take a ready-made furniture board, or you can make it yourself. I bought two six-meter boards and from the leftovers, I just got three scraps for making the back (they are higher in the list of materials).

I decided to join three boards into a shield using dowels and glue. In order for the holes for the dowels to match perfectly, I used the following “trick” - having marked the centers of the holes on the edge of the board, I punched nails without a head into them.
So that all the nails stick out at the same height, I hammer them in using pliers as in the photo below.

Having aligned the edges of the second board from above, I tapped the top with a mallet and got response dents on it.
To drill holes for dowels to a certain depth, I pasted red electrical tape onto the drill so that it could be seen.

Having prepared the holes (clean off sawdust and cut off burrs), I place dowels on the glue (pictured below). Having coated the mating edge with wood glue, I use a mallet to drive the second board into place.
The same operation must be done with the third board of the headboard.

Due to the lack of wide clamps (I will definitely need to buy them), I show my ingenuity and, using a car jack (I used it for laying floors), I squeeze a board of three boards in the doorway and wait a couple of hours until the glue dries.

After gluing, I send the shield for cutting and sanding. The most suitable place for this dusty work is the yard.

Having cut off the upper corners, I sand with an orbital sander and P80 abrasive. By sanding I remove small steps at the joints of boards and sharp corners.

The result is a pretty decent shield for the headboard.

All that remains is to install the backrest in place and secure it. To do this, I do the same operation with dowels, only without glue.

Installation of slats

Since the length of the lamellas exceeds the required one, they should be cut to the required size.

Having placed lath holders on the ends of the lamellas, we fix them to the support boards with 3.5*12 mm self-tapping screws. The distance between the slats in my case is 92 mm.

How to determine the size of a bed?

To understand how to make a double bed yourself, you first need to decide on its size. Standard length the product is considered to be 200 cm. However, this parameter varies in the range of 190-220 cm. To determine the appropriate bed size, you need to add 30 cm to the person’s height.

The minimum is 160 cm. There is no upper limit, but there are standards. They are:

  1. 160 cm;
  2. 180 cm;
  3. 200 cm;
  4. 220 cm.

To determine a comfortable width, you need to lie down, put your hands on your chest and straighten your elbows. You need to measure the distance from one elbow to the other and add 10-20 cm.

Another important factor is height. If there is a need for additional places storage, you should pay attention to a bed with drawers. However, it is never low due to design features. Height can be:

  • small, 20-30 cm;
  • medium, 40-60 cm;
  • large, 70-90 cm.

You should choose the one that is comfortable to sit on. You also need to take into account the presence of diseases of the musculoskeletal system and the person’s age.

When drawing up a diagram or drawing of a sleeping place, it is necessary to take into account all the individual characteristics of the owner.

Materials for work

The process of making a double bed largely depends on the choice of materials. You can make a bed from the following materials:

  1. wood;
  2. gland.

A wooden stock is easier to make because the process is quite simple. To make a bed frame from metal, you need to have skills in working with a welding machine and, if necessary, forging.

For working with metal

To work with metal you will need the following materials:

  • corners;
  • bolts and nuts;
  • profile pipe;
  • plate;

All elements are connected by welding.

For working with wood

A do-it-yourself wooden bed can be made from the following materials:

  1. laminated chipboard;
  2. solid wood;
  3. laminated veneer lumber.

A wooden bed is easier to process and you can add any pattern to the headboard or side panels (tsars).

For a pine bed you will need the following materials:

  • timber 5x5 cm, length 220 cm – 15 pcs.;
  • board 200x10x2 cm – 22 pcs.;
  • wood glue or PVA;
  • self-tapping screws 6.5x4 cm;
  • metal corners with a shelf width of 5 cm.

The frame is intended for a mattress measuring 200x160 cm.

Necessary accessories and fasteners

To make a bed with your own hands, you need to prepare fasteners and accessories. If the bed is planned to be foldable, you should purchase special folding mechanisms. They can be of the following types:

  1. mechanical;
  2. with springs;
  3. gas.

For stationary products you need to take:

  • metal corners;
  • screeds;
  • screws;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • legs if necessary;
  • lamellas or metal mesh.

To make drawers, you should purchase roller mechanisms. It's better to give preference metal products because they are more durable than plastic ones.

Tools for work

To do it yourself, you need to prepare the following tools:

  1. Bulgarian;
  2. welding machine;
  3. drill with a set of drills of different diameters;
  4. roulette;
  5. square;
  6. square file;
  7. metal brush;
  8. sandpaper;
  9. paint brushes;
  10. primer for metal surfaces;
  11. paint coating.

Having blacksmithing equipment will allow you to create an unusual pattern for the headboard.

To make a bed out of wood, you need to prepare the following tools:

  • hacksaw;
  • drill;
  • drills of different diameters;
  • screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • wood glue or PVA;
  • clamps;
  • square;
  • screwdriver;
  • tape measure and pencil;
  • iron corners;
  • stain;
  • sandpaper;
  • brushes for painting.

If you plan to make a bed from solid wood, you can use special cutters to create a pattern on the headboard of the bed. A wooden frame can be coated with stain, which will reveal the texture of the material and make the frame more beautiful.

Self-assembly of a double bed

To make a double bed with your own hands, you need to draw up a detailed drawing of the product in advance. It should show all the nuances, the method of connecting the frame elements, and decide on the fittings. The dimensions of the bed parts must be made with an accuracy of 1 cm. Otherwise, the base may be smaller than the mattress. If it turns out to be larger, the mattress will move, which will cause inconvenience when using the bed.

Frame making

If you are planning a structure made of timber, you first need to glue the elements together so that you get:

  1. side panels;
  2. headboard;
  3. foot back.

The surface must be flat, so if necessary, the wood is planed and sanded. Otherwise, the elements will not stick together well. Since the box should have a height of 15-20 cm, it is necessary to fasten 3-4 bars 220 cm long. To do this, the sides of the parts are generously lubricated with glue, overlapped and pressed with clamps. Start only after the glue has dried. This takes 1-2 days.

Since glued workpieces have large sizes, they must be adjusted to the parameters specified in the drawing. You will need side drawers 220 cm long, end panels 161 cm long and a central jumper 210 cm long.

Parts are fixed more securely if you use a locking connection. To do this, measure 5 cm along the edges of the side drawers on the upper bars and saw them off. It is important not to damage the central element, since it will take the load. Then, along the edges of the end sides, 5 cm are measured on the central beam and carefully removed. Now you need to connect the parts of the bed, having previously coated them with glue. The elements are compressed using clamps and left until completely dry.

You can also make a solid frame, the parts of which are attached to each other by means of dressing. The bars are glued into a box already trimmed. To do this, you first need to lay out the bottom row so that you get a rectangle. The lengths of the side and end sides should be 210 and 150 cm, respectively.

The end parts of the beams of the side panels are laid first, which are generously lubricated with glue. They are fixed using self-tapping screws. To prevent the screws from moving to the side, guide holes are made using a drill with a small-diameter drill. Each connection is checked with a square to ensure a 90° angle is maintained. The planes should also be checked, since the tree may move to the side. The length of the bars in it should be 220 cm, and the end part - 170 cm.

The last row to be laid is the top row, the dimensions of which correspond to the bottom. The sides are lubricated with glue and fixed with self-tapping screws. It is necessary to make recesses for the screw heads so that they do not protrude above the surface. The frame is left to dry for 1-2 days.

The central lintel consists of 2 glued beams 210 cm long. Before fixing, markings are made on the inside of the frame. The middle is marked, and thrust elements 15 cm long are attached below in the designated places. They act as a support for the central bar. To connect, 5 cm of the bottom beam is removed from the jumper on each side. This element is attached with glue and fixed with self-tapping screws.

If the bed has legs, they are installed at this stage. Beams 20-30 cm long can act as supports.

Headboard

The headboard can be homemade or purchased from a store. If you plan to make a bed with your own hands, you can make this element from boards in the form of lattice. To do this, use 3 boards 160 cm long and 10-12 cm wide, as well as 11-12 boards 40-46 cm long.

Walking around furniture stores and showrooms, you can often be horrified by the price tags presented there. The most annoying thing is that a simple bed made of the cheapest material (not wood at all, but ordinary chipboard or MDF with an ordinary mattress board made of rough chipboard, i.e., even without slats) has an exorbitant price for such a product. Having seen enough of this, we are starting to work on other options: some are looking for used furniture on bulletin boards, others are taking something simpler and are content with a cheap analogue, and some are simply postponing the purchase of the product for an unlimited period.

But in this article we will take a different route. We will make a double bed with our own hands.

For understanding:
The bed described in this article is no worse than those presented in furniture stores and showrooms. It is not inferior either in materials or build quality.
The only difference is that you do not pay money to design, design, engineer and manufacture this 2-bed bed. You just do it all yourself.

The advantage of this approach is that the furniture salon and you will pay almost the same for the materials. And by assembling this double bed yourself, you will save at least half the cost of the structure (i.e., exactly the same amount as the markup on the cost price for the services of design, design and assembly of this piece of furniture).

Photo of a double bed that we will make with our own hands:

This article presents a master class on the manufacture and assembly of a double bed from chipboard + MDF lining on the frames, overall dimensions 2032 * 1692 * 800 (length/width/height), size of the sleeping area for the mattress 1600 * 2000 mm, i.e. quite a standard bed for two people.

At the very bottom of the article you can download a file with assembly drawings of a double bed, as well as its configuration.

  • Screwdriver
  • Confirmation bat
  • Awl, screwdriver
  • Tape measure, ruler, pencil
  • Hammer

By and large, you won’t need any other tool to assemble this bed, of course, unless you want to save money and glue the edges onto the chipboard yourself.

But for this bed we took all the parts immediately with edging, in the same place, on furniture production, when ordering a cut. Therefore, if you glue the edge yourself, you will also need an old iron, sandpaper and a knife cutter. This process is described in more detail.

Detailing and equipment

So, what do we need in terms of details for such a double bed:

Chipboard laminated wenge 16 mm (if you want, you can choose your own color)

  • Headboard – 1692*800 mm – 1 piece
  • Footboard – 1692*400 mm – 1 piece
  • Tsar (sidewall) - 2000*250 mm - 2 pcs.

Chipboard Rough 16 mm

These parts will be located inside our piece of furniture. They will not be visible, so you should not overpay for laminated chipboard (chipboard), but you can order these parts in rough chipboard:

  • Supports (legs) for the mattress shield - 2000*234 mm - 2 pcs.
  • Short support strips for drawers - 2000*50 mm - 2 pcs.
  • Mattress shield - 1995*1595 mm - 1 piece

The mattress will not lie on slats, like expensive beds, but on a rough mattress pad. It is much cheaper than slats and, thanks to modern high-quality mattresses, you won’t even feel the difference in these details.

MDF overlays White Gloss 10 mm

  • Headboard and footboard pads – 1532*240 mm – 2 pcs.

These white pads will be used to decorate our bed. We will fasten them using 3.5*25 mm screws from the chipboard side.

Necessary accessories and fasteners

In terms of fittings, to assemble a double bed with our own hands, we only need 12 double thrust bearings. Take the color of the chipboard, as well as not on nails, and those that are tightened with screws. You need three pieces for each support on which the bed will stand.

Required Fasteners

  • Confirmat 6.4*50 – 50pcs
  • Screw 3.5*30 - 50 pcs
  • Screw 3.5*16 – 50 pcs
  • Screw 3.5*25 - 50 pcs
  • Metal corner 50*30*30*2 – 20 pcs
  • Wenge confirmed plug (matching chipboard color) – 50 pcs

Marking bed parts

Below you will see a sketch of the bed with notes on what to pay attention to. It is most convenient to start marking with large parts. For example, attach double footrests to the legs of the bed. They are attached to the headboard, footboard, as well as to the inner legs made of rough chipboard, 3 pieces for each part.

On the headboard and footboard parts, you need to measure 80 mm from the top and from the side edges. After this, you need to attach our overlays and screw them to the chipboard with 3.5*25 screws (from the side that is NOT visible). Those. The pad is screwed to the headboard from the outside, and to the foot - from the inside of the bed.

After screwing the MDF trims, you need to work on the side drawers. Namely, from the inside it is necessary to screw 200*50 mm support strips onto them for the under-mattress shield. Measure a distance of 116 mm from the top of the drawer, and along this line attach a support bar on which the mattress shield will rest.

Assembling a double bed

Assembling a double bed - assembly of parts, types of fasteners

The side drawers to the headboard and footboard need to be secured with confirmations, to which the plugs will then be attached. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the drawers are attached to the headboard and footboard with a space of 30 mm from the edge of the side panel. Here you need to add another 8 mm to get exactly in the center of the end of the drawer for drilling. In height (vertically), the drawer is located with indentations of 50 mm from the top of the footboard and 100 mm from the bottom of the back of the bed and from the headboard (see the diagram).

You can read more about drilling holes in chipboard.

After you put these 4 parts together, all that remains is to screw the inner legs of our bed onto the metal corners to the headboard and footboard, and also put the under-mattress shield.

For them correct installation, on the headboard and footboard of our double bed you need to measure 538 mm from each edge, and at this distance you need to screw these legs using furniture metal corners.

How to make a double DIY bed? I present a complete set of sketches and drawings for making a double bed with your own hands.

The task was to make such a project for a double bed and use such materials so that it would turn out beautiful, comfortable, strong and not expensive.

The project was developed in such a way that, according to the presented drawings, even a craftsman who does not have sufficient experience in making furniture could easily translate the project into a finished product. At the same time, to make a bed you will need the most simple power tool , which every home craftsman probably has.

Double bed dimensions.

The dimensions of a double bed are determined based on the dimensions orthopedic mattress. Mattress size 2000 x 1600 mm. Mattress thickness 200 mm.

Bed height calculation taking into account the thickness of the mattress. According to the calculation diagram below, it can be seen that the height of the mattress surface is 416 mm. from the floor. In this project, the height of the front backrest will be calculated so that, even taking into account the decorative lining, it does not protrude beyond the surface of the mattress. Each master will be able to individually select the height of the front backrest, making it higher or lower than the level of the mattress. Below is not advisable as it will not look very nice in the finished product. You can do it as in our version or 5 centimeters higher.

This bed has a very nice appearance, is very strong and can serve its owners very well. long time. But most importantly, the bed is very easy to make and comes out quite cheap compared to.

The simplest materials were used for production, but which nevertheless guarantee the beauty and quality of the finished product.

Used: regular pine timber 50 x 50 mm, laminated chipboard and sanded chipboard as a base for the mattress. Used for decorative finishing MDF profile AGT(or profile of any another manufacturer , but with similar parameters).

Pine timber, in the design, is used as reinforcement of the bed frame and as a support for the base under the mattress.

You can buy such timber at any construction market in any city. Sold timber section 50 x 50 mm. 4.5 and 6 m long. One beam is very cheap and is usually sold by the piece.

For a bed you will need approximately 6.8 lm. timber. Therefore, it is optimal to buy two beams 4.5 m long.

The timber is sold sawn, but not planed. For the bed, no additional processing of the timber is required, i.e. it will not need to be planed or sanded. Can be consumed directly in the form in which it is sold, since it is an internal element of the double bed design.

Double bed, drawings and assembly sketches.

1. Large headboard(back) or, as it is also called, the headboard.

Made from laminated chipboard and MDF profile. At material cutting , the part on the sheet should be oriented so that the texture of the laminate is from top to bottom, i.e. transverse. The size of a standard chipboard sheet is 1830 mm wide, so the part can be freely placed in the desired position.

Another decorative profile is installed along the upper end of the backrest. This project uses the AGT 1046 profile. The master can replace it with another one he likes, but suitable in design. Fastening the profile is similar to fastening the racks, using glue and dowels. With the top profile, you can simplify everything and “plant” it only with glue, it will also stick well, but it will be a little hacky, it’s better, of course, to strengthen the connection with dowels. It will be more durable this way.

If desired and if possible, racks and columns can be made from turned wooden parts. Only for such a turned part you will have to plan a small plane along the entire length, so that it is more convenient to attach it to the side of the backrest.

2. The headboard is small(front) or, as it is also called, the foot.

(click on the image to view full size)

Making a small headboard for a double bed uses the same techniques as a large one. The difference is that the front backrest is connected to the side frames using eccentric couplers and instead of through holes for the confirmation, couplings are installed for attaching the minifix rod. . Minifixes are needed so that no elements of this fastening protrude onto the front, visible part of the backrest. It’s easier with the backrest; the hats of the confirmats, although visible, are located at the back and usually face the wall.
