Dismantling the old mixer and preparatory work

Before dismantling the device, it is necessary to close the valves on central water supply. Taps are usually installed at the entrance to the apartment or under the sink. After closing the valves, drain the water, place a basin under the hoses and unscrew the nuts. Now you need to unscrew the old device. If access to it is difficult, remove the sink; in this case, you need to pull out the corrugation from the sewer and twist it into a ring near the siphon.

Now that the sink is removed, the plumber has easy access to the studs and the corkscrew nut. If it is impossible to unscrew it with a regular key, they take radical measures - cut it off with a grinder. This is especially true when connecting the mixer to old metal pipes. Next, we inspect the joints of the supply hoses to the water supply. If necessary, a factory extension cord is packed in this place, which will be the key to normal connection with the hose.

If desired, additional taps are installed on the supply pipelines to shut off the water, bypassing the central riser. When installing a plastic liner, adapters are packed.

If the device is installed on an old sink, the user must clean the adjacent area from rust and accumulated dirt. Before installing the faucet in the kitchen on the countertop, you need to take an electric drill with a crown and drill a hole in it.

Installing a new faucet

All types of taps differ in design; they can be mounted on a sink or countertop. In most models, fastening is carried out on metal studs. The kit of such a device contains brass nuts, as well as crescent-shaped gaskets. The sanitary fixture is sealed using a rubber insert of the same shape. There are models with one pin, but it is better to choose products with two locks. This design provides a more reliable fixation of the device.

Assembly

Installing a faucet in the kitchen with your own hands begins with its assembly. This device provides simultaneous supply of hot and cold water and has the appropriate mechanisms. The crane package includes:

  • valve;
  • spindle;
  • device head with rod and flywheel.

At the initial stage of work, eccentrics are installed, which are supplied by the manufacturer along with the sealant. If there is no such material, then it is necessary to wrap the tow in a thin layer, which insures the device from possible water leakage. If there are thick walls in the mixer body, threads are also wound to secure the adapters.

Installation on the sink

Soak the fiber pads in cool water for 10 minutes. Such operations are not carried out with silicone or rubber sealing elements. Next, we attach the faucet to the eccentrics using union nuts.

At the next stage of work, we install the gaskets in the right place and begin to clamp the tap, first manually, then using an adjustable wrench. During such work, distortions should not occur, so the nuts are screwed in several turns one at a time. When the installation of the kitchen faucet is completed, check the correctness of its position and the strength of the fastening; the faucet should not wobble.

With nut fastening

This option for installing a faucet in the kitchen begins with attaching the faucet itself to the sink. The device comes with a rubber seal in the form of a ring, which is inserted into a groove on the mixer body. After this, we screw the product into the thread on the sink and install a rubber gasket at the bottom. Next, screw the brass nut with the skirt down and press the sealing element. We tighten the nut with a wrench until we ensure that the mixer is in a stationary position on the sink.

At the next stage of work, we begin to secure the hoses. We screw them into the thread using a No. 10 key. There is no need to wind the tow onto the thread; just install a rubber sealing ring. Tighten the hoses carefully so as not to destroy the material. After this, the inlet pipes are connected to the pipes with hot and cold water.

With stud fastening

In this case flexible hoses are installed on the mixer before it is installed on the sink. In the absence of such operations, the plumber will not be able to tighten them efficiently.

Installation of a faucet in the kitchen takes place in the following order:

  1. Remove the nuts from the studs and tighten the threaded parts at the end of the faucet. The screwing depth of the thread is within 8-10 millimeters.
  2. We try on a shaped gasket and a steel plate on a stud.
  3. We pass flexible hoses through the holes with the fittings facing up.
  4. We control the presence and position of the rubber sealing ring on the tap.
  5. We screw in the hose fittings, first the short one and then the long one.
  6. We install the faucet in the sink or countertop, install a metal gasket and a sealing gasket at the bottom, attach and tighten the nuts.
  7. Tighten the nuts on the studs well. The mixer should not wobble.
  8. We control the tightness of the connection.

After installing the mixer, we fix the sink on the countertop in its original position.

To secure the sanitary fixture to the countertop, you need to prepare the following tool:

  • set of drills;
  • electric jigsaw;
  • electric drill.

Now we will learn how to install a faucet in the kitchen on the countertop. First you need to determine the location of its attachment. After the sanitary fixture is securely fastened, liquid should not spill onto the countertop, and the user should be able to comfortably use the lever.

Next, take a pencil and make markings on the countertop where the sanitary fixture is attached. Now we make four holes with a drill, then turn on the jigsaw to cut the hole. We clean the cut area from sawdust and dust, and rub the edges. At the final stage of work, we place an o-ring and a washer and screw the mixer to the countertop.

Connection to communications

We have learned how to install a faucet in the kitchen, now we will look at how to connect it to utilities. First, we tighten the eccentrics that connect the mixer to the pipes. To prevent condensation from forming between the hot and cold water hoses, it is necessary to leave a distance of 15 centimeters.

Tow is wrapped around the thread and coated with sealant. Fum tape can be used for the same purpose. After this, screw the mixer nuts onto the eccentrics and secure the special cover. This element must be secured manually; it must fit well to the wall. If there is a gap of less than 5 millimeters, the tap is disconnected and the eccentrics are shortened to the required length.

Next, install paronite, rubber or silicone gaskets into the housing nut, which will ensure a tight fit of the mixer to the eccentrics. At the final stage of work, the nuts of the inlet pipes for hot and cold water are tightened manually; if a leak is detected during the check, they are additionally tightened with a wrench.

Functionality check

After the faucet is installed in the kitchen, it is necessary to check its functionality. To do this, open the valves for supplying hot and cold water and inspect the attachment points of the flexible hoses. If leaks occur, tighten the nuts. When carrying out testing, it is necessary to turn the tap on and off, turn the lever and check the efficiency of mixing water.

When installing a faucet in the kitchen, try not to twist the supply flexible hoses. Always ensure that gaskets are present in the required places on the plumbing fixture and on the threaded connections. The biggest mistake is to over-tighten the nut at the junction of the hose and the supply pipeline. Rubber gaskets are installed in these places, they are tightened by hand, and only when a leak appears can the nuts be gently pressed with a wrench.

One of the main elements in the kitchen is the mixer, which is usually installed on the sink. After purchasing a quality appliance, the next question arises: how to install a faucet in the kitchen?

You can install the faucet by calling a specialist, or you can carry out the work of replacing it yourself. To install a kitchen faucet yourself, you will need certain tools and compliance with certain rules. Knowing the device water tap, and observing certain installation rules of this product, you can change the faucet in the kitchen in a short time.

Installing a kitchen faucet involves three steps:

  • work to prepare the installation site;
  • mixer installation;
  • connection and testing.

Faucet replacement tools

In order to install a faucet on a kitchen sink with your own hands, you will need the following tools:

  • adjustable wrench;
  • screwdriver;
  • pliers;
  • wrenches;
  • fum tape.

Work to prepare the site for further installation

Before you begin installing the mixer yourself, you should carry out a number of preliminary works:

  1. Turn off the water using the valve located in front of the meter.
  2. Dismantle the old mixer. If you need to replace an old faucet with a new one, you need to unscrew the nuts of the flexible hose from the water supply pipes using an adjustable wrench. After this, the pins that connect the faucet and the sink are unscrewed. After carrying out these simple procedures, you can dismantle the old mixer.
  3. Attention: before starting this type of work, a water container is installed under the junction of the flexible hose and pipe.
  4. The seat is cleaned using a cleaning agent.

Mixer installation

After the preparatory work, you can begin installing the crane:

  1. Use fum tape to wrap the flexible hoses. Then pass them through the washing hole. Next, the hoses are screwed to the new mixer, using a wrench. Be sure to install a gasket at the bottom of the faucet, which will provide a better degree of tightness.
  2. Using a screwdriver, pins are inserted into special holes. Their number may vary depending on the manufacturer and product configuration.
  3. Regardless of the manufacturer, the faucet is supplied with a thick rubber gasket and a metal plate. A gasket is placed on the pin, and a plate is placed on top of it. Then you need to install the faucet on the sink and fix it in a level position.

Connection and test

After a series of activities, the faucet was installed on the kitchen sink. After this, you need to connect it to the water supply system.

Connecting flexible hoses to pipes: in order to make this connection, you will need union nuts, each of which has a gasket previously inserted into it. It is necessary to screw them tightly onto the pipe and tighten them with a wrench.

Attention: The nuts must be tightened carefully so as not to strip the nut threads and damage the gasket.

Now the faucet is installed with your own hands, communications are connected, you can check the quality of the installation:

  1. First of all, you need to wipe the tap and sink dry;
  2. Open the water supply valve;
  3. Run water through the mixer; You should carefully inspect all the nuts and joints between the faucet and the sink, and the pipe connections. If everything remains dry, we can safely say that you managed to replace the faucet with your own hands.

Summing up, we can conclude that installing a faucet with your own hands is possible and takes a little time, if you follow all the rules for its installation, and also listen to the following tips:

  • The faucet in the kitchen should be replaced if it is beyond repair. Before you begin any repair work, you should know the structure of the water tap. By studying the instructions that come with the faucet, you can learn how to change the faucet axle box, how to determine the causes of a leak in a one-arm faucet, and how to replace the gasket.
  • As a rule, in standard kits Mixers with flexible tubes are not the most best quality. In this case, it is better to immediately replace them with flexible leads in a metal winding.
  • Pipe winding should only be done clockwise.
  • Before connecting flexible leads to pipes, make sure that the connecting parts will not be deformed during operation.
  • Be careful when connecting flexible connections to hot and cold water pipes. According to the norms, on the right is cold water, on the left – hot.

The variety of models, shapes, types and functional features often confuses buyers when selecting plumbing fixtures for the bathroom and kitchen. The problem of choice often becomes more complicated when you need not only to choose wisely, but also to independentlyinstall a faucet in the kitchen.

The choice depends only on the preferences of the owners

To replace an old faucet with a new one, there is no need to invite a specialist if the pipework does not require repair - modern products are equipped with a full set of all gaskets and fasteners. It is more difficult to choose the right model: the amount of time that will have to be spent on installation and the durability of the mixer depend on the quality of the material, the strength of the parts and compatibility with the internal wiring.

How to choose the right kitchen faucet

The first question that requires a precise answer: how and where you have to install a faucet in the kitchen. If the kitchen is new, the furniture is assembled to order, then the sink is selected in accordance with the project, complete with a mixer. To replace old plumbing in the kitchen, you will have to take into account the following features:

  • Depth, type of sink, sink.

deep sink

  • Drain location.
  • Location, diameter of the hole for inserting the mixer.
  • Distance from the tap hole to the wall.

The mixer can be mounted not only on a horizontal surface

Design features of different types of mixers

The most convenient for kitchen use are single-lever mixers. Setting the temperature and water pressure is done by smoothly moving one lever. Such models are especially convenient, because to turn the lever you do not need to wrap your hand around the faucet; you just need to turn the handle with your finger or the side of your palm - you will have to clean the shiny surface from dirt less often.

Single lever products with flexible retractable hose

Two-valve systems are classic mixers with two shut-off elements in the form of valves. Hot or cold water is connected to each outlet. To obtain a jet of the required power and temperature, you need to turn both taps. Forsink installations These are the faucets in the kitchen chosen only if the style of the room and furniture requires it. Manufacturers produce two-lever models in retro style: made of copper, a combination of copper with ceramic taps. The products also require special care: special products are used for cleaning. The cost of such models is an order of magnitude higher than single-lever models.

Impractical, but stylish: faucets, sinks made of copper, stone, bronze

Sensory products are produced in different forms, colors. These models are not equipped with mechanical rotary valves at all. Photocells built into the spout react to the appearance of a hand under the tap, and the water turns on automatically. Before use, the mixer is programmed: the temperature and pressure are set. If it is necessary to change the water temperature, the mixer will be reprogrammed. Advantages of touch models: ease of use, because you don’t need dirty hand touch the tap, accuracy of settings. Disadvantage: photocells power batteries, replacement must be on hand. If the battery runs out, it will be impossible to turn on the water.

Just touch or place your hand under the tap to turn on the water.

How to choose the right faucet for the kitchen

The cost of plumbing depends on the material used. Budget faucets made of soft alloys, such as silumin, look attractive, but have the shortest service life. Put it like this faucet in the kitchenwhere you constantly cook and use the sink to wash dishes 3-4 times a day, it’s not worth it. Faucets made from inexpensive alloys quickly fail threaded connections: silumin crumbles and cracks under load. The only repairable parts are gaskets. If the parts break down, it is not possible to repair the parts; you have to replace the entire mixer.

Silumin is easy to distinguish by the color of the alloy: the surface is gray

More durable plumbing products are made from brass and other durable alloys. Brass is highly durable: such taps practically do not break, only replaceable consumables fail - membranes, O-rings, gaskets. The finishing coating imitates chrome (glossy and matte), aluminum, nickel.

Brass looks nice and is quite durable

Owners of sinks made of stone (natural and artificial) can choose models made of alloy with a decorative coating that imitates the color and texture of the sink, or products made of the same material. The cost of non-standard faucets is higher than conventional steel ones.

Granite and artificial stone

After choosing the type and material, you can select a faucet that will ideally suit your kitchen sink. Compare the diameter of the hole and the size of the faucet mounting block: the block must completely cover the hole.

The next step is choosing the length and height of the spout. The length of the spout should be equal to half the length of the bowl. Ideally, the stream from the spout hits the center of the drain. The height of the spout should be sufficient to allow a tall pan to be placed in the sink. You should not choose a rise that is too high, because the higher the height of the water fall, the more splashes scatter throughout the kitchen.

Reasonable decision -install a faucet in the kitchenwith flexible pull-out spout. The hose with the nozzle is pulled out of the mixer in one movement and allows you to draw water into a container outside the sink.

Another important technical nuance is the angle of rotation of the spout. For sinks installed close to the wall, it is enough to choose a model with the ability to rotate up to 90 O . If attaching the mixer to car wash with two bowls provided in the middle of the jumper, it is better to choose a spout that rotates 180 - 360 O .

The practicality and ease of use of the device depends on the available angle of rotation.

The procedure and technique for installing faucets in the kitchen

Before starting installation, you must check the completeness of the purchased product. If selected budget option, it is better to purchase a high-quality set of rubber parts and replace the factory gaskets before installation - there is a better chance that they will not have to be replaced in a month.

Preparation: what tools and supplies are needed

To how to install a kitchen faucetas quickly as possible, you need to prepare:

  • Screwdrivers: regular flathead and Phillips, pliers.
  • Adjustable wrench or wrenches selected according to diameter.

Materials for installing the mixer

  • If the sink is not equipped with a hole for installation, you need to purchase a metal cutter that screws onto an electric drill.
  • Sealant and linen thread, alternative - FUM tape.
  • Flexible hoses, if the mixer is not equipped with a connection.
  • WD 40 or any similar spray: useful for unscrewing stuck hoses and connections without damaging the threads.

The thin spout makes it easy to apply a sufficient amount of spray to hard-to-reach places

  • Rags and a small container, cardboard.

It is advisable to lay out the new disassembled faucet on a cloth, and cover the floor in the work area with thick cardboard - if a heavy metal object falls, it can chip the tiles on the floor.

Removing the old tap and hoses

Before installation, it is necessary to get rid of water in the pipes. If the internal wiring is equipped shut-off valves for each point, it is enough to turn off the taps on the pipe under the sink. In apartments with old wiring, sometimes it is necessary to block off the entire riser.

The water must be turned off

After this, you need to open the tap and wait until all the water drains. To remove the sink or sink, you need to unscrew the connecting supply flexible hoses from the pipes. If the faucet has not been replaced for several years, then the joints will have to be treated:

  • Sticky threads are generously moistened with kerosene or treated with WD 40 spray.
  • After 5 - 20 minutes you can begin to unscrew the hoses. It is advisable to cover the floor with a rag, and place a small container under the hoses for residual water.

Stuck nuts must not be unscrewed with force.

If the sink or sink you needinstall a mixer, is not sealed, it is better to dismantle it. The sink is turned over - this makes it easier to unscrew and remove the tap. To remove the mixer from the hole, unscrew the connecting pin nut with an adjustable wrench, then remove the mixer.

It's easier to work if you can remove the sink

The installation hole is cleaned of rust and dirt. Pre-try on the new mixer. If necessary, the diameter of the installation hole is expanded. The insertion site is degreased with alcohol.

Installation and checking the tightness of connections

How correctly and reliablyinstall a faucet on a kitchen sink? Nothing complicated - the whole process takes no more than an hour and consists of 4 simple steps.

The procedure for installing the mixer on the sink:

  • A sealant must be put on the threaded base - a rubber ring, which must be tightly secured in a special groove. The mixer is installed with a threaded block into the hole.

  • A rubber sealing gasket is placed on the bottom of the mixer installed in the hole.

Material for installing the mixer

  • Tighten the fixing nut. Use pliers or an adjustable wrench. The threads are not clamped with force; first check to see if the sealing gaskets have moved.

Sometimes the kit includes 2 clamping nuts with pins

  • Check for immobility and correct installation. The position can be adjusted by loosening the nut slightly.

Hoses connected to the displacer

Hoses are connected to the installed mixer. Usually the set contains two hoses that are suitable for both cold and hot water. If there is a separate hose in the kit for hot water, it should be specially marked. One of the hoses is equipped with a long fitting, the second – with a short one.

First, install the liner with a shortened fitting. Tighten the nut with a wrench, being careful not to damage the thread. There is no need to additionally insulate the incoming pipes and fittings - there are factory seals. The long fitting is connected next. The main thing at this stage is not to overtighten the nut, so as not to damage the rubber gasket and threads.

Hoses do not need to be insulated at the top connections

The next step is to install the sink or sink on the countertop. After fixing the sink, begin connecting the hoses to the pipe. Threaded pipe fittings are pre-cleaned and insulated. There are 2 winding methods:

  1. A thin layer of paste-like sealant is applied to the threads, and linen thread is wound on top.
  2. Winding tape roll waterproof sealant. The tape is wound overlapping, trying to avoid kinks.

Easier to use tape

The hoses are connected to the pipe and clamped with an adjustable wrench. Adjust the clamp using force: the force should be medium. After completing the work, turn on the water. Monitor the tightness of all connections for several minutes.

Video: installing a mixer with a countertop mount

There is nothing difficult about install a new faucet on a new sink – if there is a hole for tapping and the pipework is in excellent condition. Without certain skills, it is difficult to cope when difficulties arise during the installation process: you need to adjust the diameter of the mortise hole, it is impossible to unscrew old hoses, or you need to install on a difficult surface, as in the video:

To install expensive products, it is better to invite a professional, because minor mistakes - too much or too little clamping force, incorrect application of sealant, incorrect position of the upper part of the mixer during installation - can lead to breakage of the mixer or cause a leak that is difficult to fix with your own hands.

The kitchen faucet is one of the most intensively used plumbing equipment. Any, even the highest quality, device of this kind requires some maintenance over time - replacing a leaking cartridge or loose valve axle boxes. However, it also happens that the body itself becomes unusable from the kneader - from constant exposure to water, irreversible processes of surface erosion begin, the threads in the sockets for valves or cartridges are “eaten”, and the chrome coating is erased. And if the product is made of low-quality silumin, then complete destruction of the body with the appearance of cracks and breaking off fragments is quite possible.

It may not be such a fatal situation - the owners simply decided to update the interior of the kitchen, and this issue cannot be solved without installing new modern plumbing fixtures. was described in a special article on our portal. Now we will talk about how to change the faucet in the kitchen yourself, without calling a specialist.

This process , Although and very responsible, but still quite accessible to the average apartment owner.

What you need for work

To carry out work on replacing the mixer, you must immediately prepare the necessary components, accessories, tools, and consumables.

  • We assume that the mixer has already been purchased. However, you definitely need to check whether the flexible hoses included in the kit are long enough. As a rule, those that come in the kit have only 300 mm, which may clearly not be enough. In addition, if the faucet is not “branded”, then the quality of these metal braided hoses usually leaves much to be desired, and they should be replaced immediately.

When choosing and purchasing such hoses, be sure to pay attention to the fact that the length of their fitting (otherwise it is often called a needle) should be different - this will make assembly easier, since the hexagons will not interfere with each other.

In addition, you need to choose the right type of threaded connection to the water pipe. This applies to both the diameter and the type of threaded part (“male” or “female”). Most often, of course, “female” hoses with a ½-inch nut are used - for direct connection in the corresponding pipe. Nevertheless, options are possible, for example, if a manifold comb or a ball valve with a “female” outlet is installed.

The hoses should not be placed under tension or tightness, but they should not be purchased with a very large margin of length. When pressure changes (opening and closing the tap), they will twitch and vibrate, and this causes rapid wear of the rubber tube located under the steel braid. It begins to wear out and may leak in the near future.

Schematic diagram of a flexible braided hose

Corrugated stainless hoses are more durable and reliable in this regard.

They are, of course, more expensive, and they are somewhat more difficult to install. But such hoses have excellent rigidity - they will retain the bend given to them during installation.

Some craftsmen prefer to make do with flexible hoses, making the water supply to the mixer from a metal-plastic pipe. To do this, you need to purchase a set of fittings with fittings for metal plastic.

Such a line, of course, is also more difficult to implement than with flexible hoses, but once you have installed such pipes, you won’t have to worry about this section in the future.

Video: how to choose really high-quality hoses

  • Tools for work you will need:

— Wrenches. It is guaranteed that you will need a 10 and 22 × 24 wrench. Very often, fastening nuts on studs require an 11 wrench. If the mixer is attached to the sink with a nut large diameter, then it’s better to prepare an adjustable wrench.

— Screwdrivers with straight and figured tips.

- Pliers.

— In some cases, you cannot do without a gas key.

— If installation will be carried out on a new sink, which does not yet have a hole, or on a countertop, you will need an electric drill with appropriate bits (usually with a diameter of 35 mm).

— To work in low-light conditions, under the sink, you will most likely need a backlight - a flashlight.

  • Materials you may need:

— Seals for threaded connections. They will be needed when there is a need to install a coupling, adapter on a water pipe, pack a fitting under metal plastic, etc. You should not trust fum tape - it is better to use ordinary flax tow and sealing paste (such as Unipak) - such a connection will be guaranteed against leakage.

— If the installation of the mixer will be carried out with temporary dismantling of the sink, then it is necessary to prepare silicone sealant and, of course, a syringe for ease of application.

— situations are possible when old “stuck” threaded connections cannot be disassembled. Can help in this case atomizing cylinder of universal lubricant “WD-40”.

Once everything is prepared, you can proceed to further actions.

Dismantling the old mixer and preparatory work

  • Before starting work directly under kitchen sink, necessary, first of all, turn off the supply of both cold and hot water. To do this, the valves at the entrance to the apartment are closed, or, if this is provided for by the internal wiring system, the water supply from the collector to the kitchen is shut off. Sometimes taps are installed directly under the sink. Of course, theoretically it is possible to block only them. However, practice shows that when working in tight spaces, the possibility of accidentally opening a ball valve with an awkward movement of the hand or elbow cannot be ruled out. To prevent such a misunderstanding, it is better to completely shut off the water supply to the kitchen.
  • After the valves are closed, you should open the tap on the mixer - this normalizes the pressure in the pipe. It is necessary to place a basin or other container of suitable dimensions under the area where the old hoses are connected. The hoses are twisted, allowing the remaining water in the pipes to escape.
  • Now you need to remove the old one. This matter is not as simple as it might seem at first glance.

— Firstly, working in an awkward position, in a very cramped space, lying on your back is very difficult, especially if the sink is embedded in a kitchen cabinet.

— Secondly, the “classic” location of the mixer is between the wall and the sink bowl. To operate in such a narrow niche wrench very difficult - there is simply no room to overlap and rotate it.

- Thirdly, almost certainly all the connections have rusted due to time and dampness, become “stuck” and will not easily give in.

In numerous Internet articles on replacing the faucet, this stage is sometimes described in passing, like “unscrew the pin with a screwdriver and pull out the faucet.” Experienced craftsmen know the value of such statements - with a very high degree of probability, these same studs will not yield to a screwdriver; rather, the rusted slot will be cut off. This means you will need a key, and the “convenience” of working with it in these conditions has already been discussed.

What's the solution? If it is possible to remove the sink (and this is possible in the vast majority of cases), then there is no need to hesitate - both the dismantling and subsequent installation of the mixer will be completed faster and with much better quality. It is better to spend a very small amount on purchasing sealant and carry out fairly simple steps to remove the sink and then install it in place - in the end you will still win.

  • To dismantle the sink, of course, you will need to disconnect it from the sewer. You can remove the flexible corrugated hose from the sewer pipe, or, which is probably more convenient for further work, simply unscrew the retaining ring on the siphon and remove this “glass” from the sink drain pipe.
  • Now, having sat comfortably, it will not be difficult to remove the used yours mixer. Depending on its design, either a large lock nut or studs are unscrewed. You may need to spray these assemblies with WD-40 to get them to yield. There are situations when this does not help - then you will have to take radical measures - cut them off with a hacksaw or a grinder. The main thing is not to damage the sink.

Sometimes you have to resort to cutting with a grinder when replacing an old type mixer installed on a rigid liner made of steel pipes.

It is extremely difficult to disassemble rusted or covered with several layers of paint. Therefore, it may be more profitable to simply cut off the higher threaded part. Next - by circumstances. If you manage to free a high-quality threaded pipe for further connection of a flexible hose, then the issue becomes simpler. If not, then, apparently, you will also have to cut the thread with a tool.

  • In order not to delay until later, it is necessary to immediately inspect the condition of the water pipes suitable for washing, in particular, those threaded sections on which flexible hoses are planned to be screwed. In order for the hose gasket to fit tightly to the pipe cut, it must be smooth around the entire circumference, not have sharp or protruding edges, or distortion of geometry due to corrosive effects. If in doubt, it is better to “pack” a factory-made threaded extension in this place - this will guarantee a reliable connection to the hose.

It is advisable to “update” the threads on pipes by installing similar extensions

Installation is carried out on tow, the fibers of which are wound clockwise along the threads on the pipe, and then coated with sealing paste. The extension cord is tightened with an open-end or gas wrench until it stops.

  • If you wish and have the funds, you can immediately install shut-off valves if they were not installed previously. This will allow you to subsequently carry out any repair work in the kitchen, for example, if emergency situation without turning off the general water supply network at home.
  • If you plan to supply water with metal-plastic pipes, it makes sense to immediately “pack” transition fittings onto the steel pipes.
  • If you intend to install a new faucet on an old sink, then you must thoroughly clean the area around the mounting hole from scale build-up, accumulated dirt, traces of rust, etc. This cleaning is carried out on both the front and bottom sides.
  • If you plan to install a new sink, you must, of course, immediately try to purchase one that already has an installation hole. However, some models are not equipped with it, and appropriate measures will have to be taken.

If the sink is made of stainless steel, then a special tool is used for this, which cuts perfectly even holes in the metal up to 1 mm thick.

The diameter is selected based on the mixer model. So, if it is mounted on studs, then 28 or 32 mm will be enough. When attaching to a nut, the hole must have a diameter of 35 mm.

The process of cutting a hole is simple

It is easy to use - just drill a hole with a diameter of 8 mm in the intended location. The device is inserted with the cutting part from below, twisted with a bolt so that the cutting edges fit tightly to the metal. Then, turning the bolt with a wrench, ensure the rotation of the knives in a circle.

The situation is more complicated if the sink is ceramic. To cut the hole in this case, you will need a diamond crown. But even its presence in the home arsenal does not guarantee success - such a sink can easily be damaged if there is no experience in such work.

Advice - in both cases, it is better to turn to professionals. Usually, good plumbing salons will definitely tell you where and how this can be done, and in some cases such a service can even be provided on the spot.

If the mixer is installed on a countertop, then a hole is drilled in it. To do this, you can use an electric drill with a hole saw Ø 28 or 32 mm. Making the required hole with such a tool in a wood composite panel will not be difficult.

As has already been mentioned several times in the article, faucet models may differ in the way they are attached to the surface of the sink or countertop.

  • The diagram shows a mixer that is mounted on threaded rods. The kit of such a product includes the studs themselves with brass nuts, a crescent-shaped clamp with holes for the studs and a rubber or polymer gasket of the same configuration.

There are models of mixers that use only one pin, but such a design will not be particularly stable (rotation around the axis is not excluded), and it is better to purchase one with two.

This design ensures reliable installation on surfaces up to 30 ÷ 35 mm thick, which is especially important when installing the mixer on a countertop.

  • Another option is that the mixer has a cylindrical threaded part and a nut at the bottom, usually M 34.

Such models are more suitable for installation on a metal sink. It is important that there is no complex relief configuration at the bottom in the hole area - an absolutely flat area is necessary, otherwise a tight fit and reliable fixation will not be achieved.

Installation different types mixers has its own characteristics.

A. Installation of a mixer with mounting on nut

The elongated lower cylindrical part will not interfere with the screwing of flexible hoses, so installation begins, in fact, with attaching the mixer itself to the sink.

  • The faucet kit always includes a rubber sealing ring, and there is a special groove for it at the lower end of the body. The first step is to install the gasket into this groove.

  • The threaded cylindrical part is inserted into the hole in the sink. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the rubber ring remains in place and does not move.

  • Then, a wide rubber gasket is installed below, which should also be included in the delivery set.

The sealing gasket is put in place...
  • The brass fixing nut is screwed on. It has a kind of “skirt” - a washer-shaped extension that will provide maximum pressure through the already installed rubber gasket.

...and then the clamping nut...
  • The nut is tightened with an adjustable wrench so as to ensure that the mixer does not move on the sink. In this case, it is necessary to check the correct orientation of the spout - it should be positioned so that the sectors of rotation to the left and right from the central position are equal, and the switch lever or valves are positioned exactly relative to the sink. When the mixer is positioned at an angle, the spout position is selected diagonally.

... which is tightened with a key, fixing the position of the mixer on the sink
  • Adjusting the position is easy - you can loosen the nut, align the mixer and fix it again.
  • Now you can proceed to installing the hoses. To begin, screw in a hose with a short fitting and tighten it with a 10mm wrench.

No winding of the threaded part of the fitting with tow or fum tape, as a rule, not required - it has one or two sealing rings, which should ensure reliable sealing. The fitting is screwed in all the way with medium force - it is dangerous to overtighten, as the rubber ring may be damaged. Usually, hand effort is enough, and only then no more than one turn with the key.

... and then, in the same way - with an extended
  • The next step is to install the second hose in the same way - with an extended fitting.
  • If you plan to supply water through a metal-plastic pipe, then the fittings with fittings are screwed in in the following sequence - first the one with a bend, and then the straight one.
  • After the hoses (fittings) are screwed in, the sink can be installed in place.

B. Installation of a mixer with mounting on hairpins

The peculiarity of the installation in this case is that the hoses are screwed into the hole in the countertop or sink before installing the mixer, otherwise it will not be possible to tighten it properly.

  • First, the brass nuts are removed from the studs, and the studs themselves are screwed into the corresponding holes at the bottom end of the mixer. The studs usually have slots for a straight or figured screwdriver, but, as a rule, they are easily tightened by hand, without much effort. A strong tightening is not needed here - it is enough to simply screw them all the way to a depth of 8 ÷ 10 mm so that they stand steadily, without play.

You can immediately try on how the shaped gasket and pressure plate will fit onto the studs, but then these elements should be removed - they will be installed later.

  • Both hoses are threaded into the hole in the sink (countertop) with the fittings facing up.
  • Be sure to check the presence and correct installation of the sealing ring on the mixer body - exactly as described above.
  • The next step is to screw in the flexible hose fittings. The sequence of work does not change - first short, then extended.
  • Mixer with connected hoses and screwed-in pins are inserted into the installation hole of the sink or countertop.

  • From below, a shaped gasket is first put on the studs, and then a metal pressure plate. The brass nuts are baited and tightened by hand as far as possible.

  • After checking the correct location of the sealing ring on the body and the direction of the spout, the nuts are tightened with a 10 (sometimes 11) wrench until they stop, so that the mixer is securely fixed to the surface, without the slightest play.

Neatly installed faucet - bottom view
  • It is important to ensure that there is no gap left near the housing, not covered with gasket– this sometimes happens when the hole in the sink is too large and the mixer is not centered correctly in it.

That's it, the mixer is installed, you can install the sink in place.

Let us repeat that all of the above actions, of course, can be carried out under certain conditions and due dexterity without dismantling the sink, but this is unnecessary difficulty.

Connecting the mixer to the water supply

Installation of a sink is a separate topic that requires detailed consideration in a dedicated article. We can only note that if it is mortise and mounted in the old place, then a strip of sealant must be applied to the cleaned surface of the countertop around the perimeter of the installation. After pressing, it should reliably close the gap to prevent water from penetrating through it.

If the sink is overhead and adjacent to the wall, then after installing it, the gap between them is also sealed with sealant.

Now all that remains is to connect the hoses to water pipes. Hose nuts are usually already equipped with rubber gaskets, and no rewinding or excessive force is required to securely seal the connection. On the contrary, tightening it too tightly can lead to the destruction of the gasket and the appearance of a leak. It is enough to tighten it by hand until it stops, and then tighten it only ½ turn with a 22 or 24 key.

Of course, there will be some fuss with the metal-plastic eyeliner a little more– it is necessary to carefully measure the required segment, give it the required bend, and then tighten it in the appropriate compression fittings.

Video: connecting a mixer with a rigid connection

Usually, when connecting hoses or supply pipes, the following diagram is followed: on the left - hot water, on the right – cold.

If the sink was removed, then do not forget to connect it back to the sewer by replacing the siphon and inserting a corrugated hose with a sealing collar into the designated outlet of the sewer pipe.

In fact, that’s it, you can turn on the water supply and try the mixer in operation. There is, however, one more subtlety - it is recommended to start by pouring water with the tip removed - the aerator. The fact is that small inclusions can accumulate in pipes, hoses, or even in the mixer itself, which can quickly clog the holes of this nozzle. After several liters of water have drained, it is easy to install the aerator in its normal place.

When starting up for the first time, be sure to check all connections for leaks. If there are signs of leakage, these deficiencies must be corrected immediately with a small tightening.

The article discussed the most common ways to install kitchen faucets. However, you may encounter more complex options.

  • So, for example, if the faucet spout is a shower head on a retractable hose, then you will have to make another switching and adjustment.

At the bottom there will be a hose (position 1 in the diagram) with or without corrugated braiding, about 1.5 m long, with a fitting at the end. This fitting, after installing the mixer in its regular place, is screwed into the socket intended for it on the body. A sinker is installed on the most flexible hose (position 2) - it will return it to its place and hold it in this position, and at the same time will serve as a limiter on the length of the hose. The position of this sinker can be changed using a locking screw.

  • Another option is when the mixer spout has two channels - for regular water supply and for purified water. drinking water. On such models, an additional fitting is provided (item 3) for connecting another hose coming from the system installed under the sink and for post-cleaning.

The mixer for drinking water is turned on using a separate tap or lever (item 4).

There are also more “sophisticated” schemes - with thermostats located under the sink, autonomous boilers, electronic control units, with mechanical traction connected to the drain plug of the sink bowl, and others. The installation technology in this case should be described in detail in the proposed product data sheet. However, if there are any ambiguities in this matter, you should not engage in amateur activities - it is better to invite a specialist.

When choosing a kitchen faucet, you need to follow not only aesthetic considerations, but also its practicality. At the same time, not only in terms of ease of use, but also ease of installation, as well as opportunities for routine repairs. Therefore, before going to the store, it makes sense to study the features of models of various designs and the nuances of their connection.

When choosing the optimal model, the following points are taken into account:

  • dimensions and depth of the sink;
  • availability of free space at the sink between the bowl and the wall;
  • dimensions and location mounting hole for the faucet.

The most widely used types of kitchen faucets are:

  • axle crane;
  • single lever;
  • electronic.

Species

  • Traditional axle-box cranes are simple in design and reliable. The main working element in them is the crane axle box, which can be easily replaced or repaired if necessary. Accordingly, the problem of how to change the entire faucet in the kitchen does not arise. Crane axle boxes come in two types: ceramic and worm. Firstly, locking and adjusting the flow of water is done by rotating ceramic plates with a hole relative to each other. Secondly, by raising and lowering the rod rotating along the thread.
  • Single lever kitchen faucet is more convenient to use, since it has one single control body. Main element it contains a cartridge, very similar in design to an axle-box faucet, but it controls two flows of water at once. The housings of single-lever models can be either stationary or rotating relative to the installation axis. There are also ball ones, in which the water is blocked by a rotating ball with holes.
  • Electronic options allow you to provide water at a constant temperature. Some models can turn on water using a contactless sensor. However, structurally they are very complex devices, which inevitably increases their cost. Power supply can be supplied from the mains or from batteries.
    The height of the spout is selected taking into account the characteristics of the sink bowl. For shallow models, models with a low spout that reduce splashing are better suited.
    In a kitchen, installation is most often done either directly on the sink bowl or on the countertop.

Preparation of materials and tools

Before changing the faucet, you need to prepare a complete set of tools and consumables.

The following tools will be needed:

  • adjustable or open-end wrench by 10-12 mm;
  • tubular wrench for screwing hard-to-reach nuts;
  • pliers; screwdriver;
  • rag;
  • basin or suitable sized bucket,
  • flashlight.

Materials you will need:

  • installation kit supplied with the device (stud, O-rings, nut and fastening half-washers);
  • fum sealing tape or flax with special impregnation (English sealant Tangit is especially suitable);
  • silicone sealant;
  • flexible liner.

The length of the hoses is chosen so that the hose does not break at an acute angle, but is not stretched.

Before replacing the faucet in the kitchen, it is advisable to purchase new supply hoses (often included with the new faucet).

Bellows or reinforced hoses can be used as connections.

  • Bellows liners They are made of stainless steel, are highly reliable and costly.
  • Reinforced hoses more common due to their low price and sufficient reliability.

You can indirectly determine which kitchen faucet is better by the quality of the connections.

Reliable products have the following characteristics:

  • braid made of stainless steel or aluminum;
  • ethylene propylene rubber (EPDM) hose.
  • tips and fittings made of stainless steel or brass.

Removing the old tap and hoses

To replace the crane with a new one, you must first dismantle the old equipment.

This requires a number of operations.

  1. The water is blocked on the outlet to the sink.
  2. The taps are opening so that the remaining water in the pipes can flow freely into the sink.
  3. If the sink is a surface-mounted type, then it is detached from the cabinet.
  4. The liner is disconnected from the water pipe. At this stage, it is advisable to use a basin to drain the remaining water.
  5. The siphon is unscrewed.
  6. The sink is raised and installed on the cabinet in such a way as to provide free access to the place where the device is attached.
  7. Flexible connections are disconnected.
  8. If there is a watering can, then it is also disconnected.
  9. The fastener is unscrewed.

Then you should hold the spout with one hand, and with the other unscrew the threaded mounting pin and remove the old tap.

Kitchen faucet installation

Assembly

First of all, you should assemble the device itself. those. screw on the spout, aerator, install handles, etc. The sequence of operations may be different for different models and from different manufacturers. You can find out more details and features in the instructions supplied with each device. When choosing a faucet for the kitchen, it is advisable to make sure that this document is clear.
When assembling the faucet, you should not put in significant effort. As a rule, all components can be screwed on freely by hand. If you need to use keys, they must be used with the utmost caution. Otherwise, there is a risk of damage to the chrome plating of the device.

In this case, fabric linings will be an excellent solution for installing a faucet in the kitchen without damaging it.

The length of the fittings can be either the same for both connections or different. The second option is used by many manufacturers to facilitate installation work. The procedure for further actions will depend on where the faucet is attached: directly to the sink or to the countertop.

Installation on the sink

There are two ways to attach a two-valve faucet to a sink:

  • on a stiletto heel
  • on the nut.

With stud fastening

In the first case, a threaded rod should be screwed into the valve body before installation. It has threads along its entire length, but before screwing in, you need to make sure that the spline notch will remain on the outer part and will not go into the valve body. This is necessary to simplify repair or dismantling in the future.

In some models for overhead sinks there may be two such pins. Next, an annular gasket is placed on the base of the tap.

It is necessary to ensure that it lies in the place intended for it.

In some cases, the gasket may have a complex shape and must be oriented accordingly during installation.

The next step is to insert flexible hoses into the hole in the sink and install the kitchen faucet in place. When performing this operation, it will be convenient if you turn the sink so that you can work with both hands both on top of the bowl and on the bottom.
Then a rubber seal is put on, sealing the installation site on the underside of the bowl. The shape of this seal coincides with the shape of the pressure plate.
Now you can put the pressure plate on and screw the nut onto the threaded rod. When the faucet is secured, begin fixing the sink to the cabinet.

With nut fastening

Installation on the nut is done in a slightly different way. Cranes of this design have a wide cylindrical part at the base with a thread onto which a fastening nut is screwed. Connecting the liner to such a base is much easier than in the case of a stud fastener. Therefore, the supply hoses will be connected after installing the faucet on the sink. It will not be superfluous to take this point into account when deciding which mixer to choose.

Installation consists of several operations:

  • Gasket Installation into the groove under the base of the device;
  • The threaded part is inserted into the mounting hole of the sink. When performing this action, it is necessary to control the position of the elastic pad;
  • From the bottom of the sink, another rubber gasket from the supply kit is put on. It differs in shape from the top gasket. If the top one looks like a thin rubber ring of circular cross-section, then the bottom one is flat and wide. At the same time, the design of a kitchen faucet may be different, and the shapes of the gaskets may also differ;
  • The fastening nut is screwed on. In this case, you need to control the position of the mixer base. The front part of it should be facing the front edge of the sink. If the design of the tap is such that it is difficult to visually determine its position, then the alignment is checked by turning the spout. It should deviate at the same angle in both directions. If the tap is located in the corner of the sink, then it should be oriented diagonally to the sink;
  • The supply hoses are screwed on. First of all, a hose with a short fitting is installed, then with a long one (disassembling a kitchen faucet - in reverse order). Additional sealing of the connections is not required, since their fittings already have rubber O-rings. You should not forget about their existence when connecting the eyeliner. The tightening forces should not be excessive so as not to damage the rubber seals.

The final stage is installing the sink on the cabinet.

Tabletop installation

This installation option is in many ways similar to the nut mount. The difference is that in this case the sink usually does not have wide sides with space for installing a tap. Therefore, you will have to place the mortise mixer on the countertop, in close proximity to the sink.
The mounting location must be chosen in such a way that it is convenient to reach the crane controls. In this case, it is necessary to check that in the working position the spout is above the sink.
Having decided on the fastening point, proceed to drilling a hole in the tabletop. To do this, use a drill and a wood pen. Pen diameter - 38 mm. The remaining steps will be as follows:

  • supply hoses are threaded into the threaded cylindrical fastener;
  • the liner is attached to the base of the mixer;
  • the cylindrical fastener is screwed in there;
  • put on the upper rubber gasket;
  • the entire structure is inserted into a hole in the tabletop. It is not possible to thread the liner nuts into the hole at the same time, so they are threaded sequentially one at a time;
  • From below, a rubber gasket, washer and nut are put on the fastener.

Then the position of the mixer is checked and the entire structure is tightened with a wrench.
The built-in mixer is installed in almost the same way.

Installation of coarse filters

Tap water often brings with it a lot of debris:

  • sand,
  • pieces of rust, etc.

To rid the aerator and mixer cartridge from contamination, it is necessary to use coarse filters.

It is best to install the filter at a branch from the riser, where it will be easy to maintain. In this case, it is necessary to control the position of the oblique pipe with the filter mesh. It should always be angled downwards, making the mesh easier to clean.

In addition, the arrow on the filter housing must coincide with the direction of water movement.

Connecting hoses

The choice of a kitchen faucet also depends on the availability of high-quality hoses in the kit. At one end they have a fitting for connecting to the mixer, at the other - a union nut for connecting to the water supply. The fitting is fitted with one or two O-rings and rubber. They are quite enough to ensure tightness when connecting to a new mixer.

After completing the installation of the mixer, you need to make sure that it is working and that all connections are tight. To do this, open the tap on the riser and the mixer in the kitchen. After the air escapes, the mixer is closed and the appearance of leaks is monitored for half an hour.

Most often, leaks occur due to improper assembly of the faucet and poor sealing at the connection points.

  • In the first case it is necessary to disassemble the faucet and reassemble it, ensuring that the gaskets and cartridge are positioned correctly. In the instructions you can find information on how to disassemble the mixer.
  • In the second case- use fum tape or flax for a tighter connection of the fitting or union nut.

A pull-out kitchen faucet can cause a little more problems, in which the hose to the watering can may be damaged. It is better to replace such a part entirely.

Is it necessary to install ball valves in front of the mixer?

The ball valve has only two operating positions:

  • open,
  • closed.

Installing such a tap allows you to cut off the tap from the water supply for repair or replacement. However, in practice this does not always make sense.

As plumbing experts recommend, first you need to study the water distribution diagram throughout the apartment. If immediately after diverting from the riser there is already ball valve, then there is no need to duplicate it. If desired, you can install a valve or reducer that will help limit the water pressure in the tap.

How much does it cost to replace a kitchen faucet?

The total cost of replacement will consist of the costs of the faucet itself, consumables and installation work. At the end of 2018:

  • The minimum price of a kitchen faucet is 400 rubles. The maximum is from several thousand.
  • Which mixer is better is up to the owner to decide, but more expensive models will always be more reliable. A coarse filter costs from 120 rubles.
  • In most cases, you won’t have to spend money on eyeliner, since it is usually included in the kit. If it is not there or is not long enough, then you will have to pay 150 rubles for the hoses.
  • Calling a plumber will cost from 400 rubles. At self-installation the work will be free.

To prevent the problem of “how to choose a kitchen faucet” from bothering you too often, you just need to promptly replace worn-out gaskets, cartridges and aerators. In addition, it is periodically necessary to clean the coarse filter and monitor the condition of the mesh inside it.
