… So at the age of 27 I came to the conclusion that I wanted to create clothes. But I was frightened by the thought of competitors, graduates of the prestigious London College of Fashion and Saint Martin's University (I could not afford such training).

In general, I chose the Fashion Design and Textiles course within my means. A pleasant surprise awaited me here! It turned out that with them it’s the other way around: the less educated you are before joining, the more advantages.

And I just graduated high school, and what is very important, with only triplets. They gave me £1500 off! If I had finished school with excellent marks, I wouldn’t have seen the discount like my ears :) Considering that I only had £50 left to pay, this was a significant savings.

To celebrate, I signed up for the extra course Fotoshop for Fashion Design and Publishing, without thinking about the workload. I decided that I would endure it and I did :)

Along the way, I had to pass an exam in mathematics and English.
Therefore, my advice to those who are planning to study in England to become a designer: make sure that you have certificates in English and mathematics equivalent to local GCSE.

About the learning process itself, I can say that, with the Ukrainian school load behind me, it was easier for me than for others. While my classmates were indignant at the amount of work, I silently walked and worked, and moreover, I enjoyed it. So learning is easier for “ours” here.

The program itself is very interesting, they give you a lot of freedom of choice: drawing in museums, visiting exhibitions and beautiful places, preparing presentations and studying the industry (including interviews with someone already successful in this field).

Without exaggeration, I lived with projects 24 hours a day. In those short hours when I managed to sleep, I dreamed that I was sewing, drawing, sculpting :) And you know, there were a couple of cases when I could not solve a problem, and the solution actually came in a dream! She jumped up and ran to work. Since we live in a one-room apartment, this created problems and was not entirely fair to our sleeping spouse.

So I would advise local students to get a separate room. This is not a problem here, I myself rented a room for 4 years. It's inexpensive and you'll have your own space.

Work since college. Inspiration - architecture of Massimiliano Fuksas.

More. Evolution from orange to dress.

In general, I didn’t have any problems with studying as such, but I did have problems with my classmates. Here the main role was played by the difference in mentality, whatever one may say, it exists. I was considered too straightforward, and sometimes even rude. Here it is not customary to directly say what you think, so as not to offend the feelings of your interlocutor. Considering that my classmates were between 16 and 20 years old, their feelings were often offended. Some even cried (I'm not kidding!). Needless to say, how much they “liked” that I was always ready on time with all projects and tests. Even my husband jokingly started calling me “sag” :)

I’m not very suspicious, but this attitude still upset me. And as a result - stress. Ballet classes helped me overcome stress.

I highly recommend including any physical exercise. Helps relieve mental stress + maintains figure.

Again, at 27 years old, ballet is for beginners? Yes, it's possible here. Why, at 27, in my group there are children of 5 years old, a Japanese man of 40 years old, and an English granny of 70 years old!
As they say, both old and young.

I really wanted to sew myself a dress with a transparent, almost invisible top.

At the moment, I had to interrupt my studies due to financial instability, but this does not scare or upset me, because I know that when the situation improves, returning will not be a problem. By the way, here banks give students loans for education, but I prefer not to get into debt.

In the meantime, I order and read useful books, study a lot and improve myself, earn extra money altering and repairing clothes, and sew to order. I’m preparing my collection, looking for connections, information, experience.

For example, last week I participated in a charity fashion show. True, I haven’t managed to break into the role of a designer yet, but I was hired as a model. But I made friends with two wonderful designers who are always happy to help with advice and practice.

The Tribe Fashion Show. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of people suffering from the consequences of the use of chemical weapons Agent Orange in Vietnam.

In general, looking back, I can say with confidence that dreams come true, and any experience is an important and necessary step towards your dream.

Interview: Varvara Zotova

About ten years ago, everyone who dreamed of a career in fashion, I had to think about traveling to another country and scrupulously calculate the budget: Italy, France, Great Britain, USA - it seemed that a good specialized education was only possible abroad. All this, of course, is not unfounded, but now the situation has changed for the better.

Firstly, there were many educational projects, special courses, open lectures - fashionable education has become more accessible. And secondly, speakers from near and far abroad countries began to frequent Russia, and schools began to open on the basis foreign universities. We decided to focus on four educational programs that are directly related to fashion design. The program curators told us what their main difference is from their competitors, and the students shared their impressions and plans for the future.

Fashion laboratory of Vyacheslav Zaitsev

TERMS:
The cost of full-time education this year is
300 thousand rubles. Evening - 100 thousand rubles.

“Fashion Laboratory” is something like a one-year graduate school for young artists with an emphasis on the practical part. The concept of the course was developed by Vyacheslav Zaitsev himself, who is directly involved in the learning process: once every three weeks he conducts one-on-one conversations with students, notes their results and gives appropriate recommendations. Vyacheslav Zaitsev approached the opening of the “Laboratory” responsibly: he visited fashion design schools around the world and, based on the information collected, opened his own in 1997.

The applicant can choose the form of study that suits him: full-time or part-time. In the full-time department, classes are held 5 days a week for 8 academic hours for one year, in the correspondence department - 4 days a week for 4 academic hours for 3 months. The program of both courses includes design - a practical study of various methods of designing men's and women's clothing, fake clothing modeling method, special composition and more. During the training process, all students can attend collection shows, use literature about fashion, and also invite models from the Vyacheslav Zaitsev agency to take part in the graduation show.

Elena Viktorovna Rzhevskaya, leading teacher at the Vyacheslav Zaitsev Fashion Laboratory: “The Laboratory is the only design school in the world at a named fashion house. We have a fairly rich training program and no unnecessary subjects. We provide the opportunity for preferential participation in Europe’s largest fashion week - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia.”

Alexey Mikhailov, student at Vyacheslav Zaitsev’s Fashion Laboratory, brand MIKHAILOV ALEKSEI: “In parallel with my studies at college in Smolensk, I studied in Moscow at a fashion house in the modeling agency Z’S Models. It was there that I learned about the Fashion Laboratory and attended the graduation show of its students. I was amazed by the alumni collections, and then I knew exactly where I wanted to study. I was very nervous at the interview, but it happened. I like that the whole process is aimed at individual work with each student, at revealing his talent. While still a student, I showed the collection as part of MBFWR fashion weeks.”

British higher
design school

TERMS: Russian program additional education“Fashion design”, 2 years - 330 thousand rubles per year.
British undergraduate program with a British diploma - the first compulsory stage, 1 year (Foundation Art and Design) - 380 thousand rubles per year, then the BA (Hons) Fashion course itself, 3 years - 475 thousand rubles per year.

The British Higher School of Design in Moscow was founded in 2003 on the basis of educational program Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, University of Hertfordshire (UK). For those who want to gain the experience of European studies without going abroad, "British" is one of the options. In addition, studying at BHSDA will help improve English - it is one of the main subjects, and in some courses, such as BA (Hons) Fashion, they teach exclusively in foreign language. The British Higher School of Design has two long-term programs for future professional fashion designers.

The first is BA (Hons) Fashion, British higher education, here classes are taught by British curators and teachers from Central Saint Martins. The training takes place over four years, at the end of which students receive an international bachelor of arts diploma and can go abroad to continue their studies or work. Second additional program vocational education, "Fashion Design", is focused more on Russian market and in two years it trains specialists, many of whom launch their own clothing brands by the end of their studies. In general, both programs prepare specialists with a wide range of skills: from design and 3D modeling to the principles of creating marketing campaigns. For example, the designers who graduated from “Britishka” are the heroes of our “New Brand” column.

Lisa Romanova, Communications Director of the BHSAD: “The key difference between “British” is its close connection with the industry. Most of our teachers are practicing designers and artists. The school constantly holds master classes and specialized conferences; we try to keep up with the times and train specialists who will be in demand on the market both now and in ten years. Our graduates include Kirill Richter, Dasha Selyanova (ZDDZ), Maria Dzhankoy (Jahnkoy) and many others. And the collections of our graduates can be seen every year at the autumn Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia.”

Nina Samokhina, a future graduate of the Fashion Design course at BHSAD in 2017: “Before entering Brittanka, I had long been interested in its graduates, followed their successes, and read about how well the creative process is organized. I really wanted to come here for the atmosphere. I like that all the subjects and all the information that we are given is relevant and related to the realities of the profession. In the future, I plan to develop my brand Secret Garden and freelance in the field of fashion design.”

School of Design of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, direction "Fashion"

TERMS: Bachelor's degree - 300 rubles per year of study; master's degree: fashion - 300 thousand rubles, communication design and design - 330 thousand rubles.

The School of Design is part of the National research university"Higher School of Economics". Education here is carried out according to the European program: bachelor's degree, master's degree, and preparatory and open courses are also held here. The “Fashion” direction is suitable not only for those who want to become a designer, but also for all future art directors of a brand or store, stylists, merchandisers and buyers: graduates gain knowledge from a variety of areas of the fashion industry and in the future will be able to find themselves in many related areas. Unlike many other commercial schools, training here is conducted only in small groups.

Ekaterina Pavelko, curator of the undergraduate educational program “Fashion”, stylist: “We teach not so much sewing, but design and creative thinking, we immerse students in a modern context. At one time, the Higher School of Economics was created as an outpost of advanced education, and the School of Design, which appeared just four years ago, sets itself the task of providing the best and most progressive education in various fields of design (communication design, animation and illustration, environmental design, game -design, design and programming, design and contemporary art, design and photography, theater and film artist, fashion) at the world level. Our Fashion program focuses on the innovative experience of international fashion schools and uses current educational technologies. And the project-based learning system allows students from the first year to think about practical problems and solve them, based on current industry trends.”

Dasha Belousova, fourth year student in the Fashion department at the School of Design High school economics: “As introductory task I needed to prepare a creative project for more or less free topic and pass an art history interview. Despite the fact that I passed both stages of the exam rather on a whim, in the end I entered, finding myself in the very first, experimental intake of the school. In the first year, everyone had a common direction: we learned to think like a designer, mastered basic design skills and worked in basic design programs. I honestly admit that this was not easy for me.

Then the second year began, and I chose the “Fashion” direction. Here we were already working on our projects, preparing mood boards, embroidering, taking photographs - in general, we did everything that I love most. During our four years of study, in addition to studying at the university, we did internships in Moscow brands, participated in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia - so now I understand perfectly well what to expect from the “adult” fashion world. In the future, I plan to continue my master’s studies at the School of Design - and at the same time work at the Inshade brand with our curator Masha Smirnova. In the future, I would like to create and develop my own brand - I hope it will work out.”

Russian State University
them. A. N. Kosygina

TERMS: The cost for this year has not yet been set. Last year, full-time education cost 141 thousand rubles, and part-time education cost 40 thousand rubles. Budget places this year there are 115 for full-time and 10 for part-time.

The history of the Moscow State University of Design and Technology begins in the late 20s of the last century. By resolution of the Supreme Council national economy The USSR decided to create a university specializing in light industry. In 2012, the State Textile University named after MGUDT joined. Kosygina. It was then that a new joint history of the country’s two largest specialized universities began.

Instead of faculties, there is a division into institutes. Thus, the Technological Institute of Light Industry offers training in three undergraduate programs: “Technology of Light Industry Products”, “Design of Light Industry Products” and “Commodity Science”. The training takes place over four years, followed by an optional two-year master's degree. Among other things, the Institute of Technology is famous for providing students with a chance to have close contact with potential employers. In addition to the system of foreign internships, there is industrial practice, where students develop practical skills and create industrial collections of products.

Anna Fokina, director of the Technological Institute of Light Industry: “Our university has preserved the system of fundamental, classical Russian education, constantly improving the educational process and introducing new teaching technologies. We cooperate with leading companies in the fashion industry and mandatory we direct to industrial practice their students, where they learn mastery.

To promote talented youth, the university organizes competitions that are held at the best venues in the fashion industry and specialized exhibitions. So, literally on March 24, the final was held in Gostiny Dvor as part of Fashion Week in Moscow All-Russian competition“Tochka RU”, the founder of which is our university. This is a unique opportunity for students to perform in front of the jury on the main podium of the country.”

Yulia Shakhmatova, student LKSh-214: “Since childhood, I dreamed of sewing clothes. She sewed dresses for all her dolls herself, presenting them on the catwalk. Parents advised to enter a university with a long history, and Moscow was the priority state university design and technology. Today it is the Russian State University named after A. N. Kosygin. I am very glad that I did not make a mistake in my choice: it is interesting to study here, there are many necessary subjects. The university helps you find contacts with possible employers, get good job, while still at the university. In the future, I plan to continue my master’s studies here.”
