Is honor needed in the modern world. Definition: what is the honor and dignity of a person. What is human dignity

In the old days, people were afraid of losing their honor, they defended it and died for it in duels. Now, of course, there is no such thing, but this does not mean that he is not endowed with this quality. Everyone should know honor. Why does a person need dignity and how not to lose it?

Definition: What is honor

The concept of “honor” means the totality through which he gains self-respect. It includes such as nobility, justice, valor, courage, honesty, high morality and strict moral principles.

In the past, honor was associated not so much with internal qualities as with one’s ability to behave in society, to comply with established norms and rules of behavior. This was required to maintain reputation and respect for one’s person.

The definition of the word "honor" is closely related to the concept of honesty. First of all, a person should not deceive himself. Honor sets limits on what people can allow themselves to do without feeling guilty or remorseful.

What is human dignity

The dignity of a person is his respect for his person, a sense of the importance of himself as an individual, the ability to get out of any situation without overstepping his principles. It is inherent in every person from birth.

The dignity of a person allows him to realize the importance of not only himself, but also those around him. People who have this quality treat others with respect. Dignity gives a person a sense of self-confidence and self-confidence. The higher we value ourselves, the more potential opportunities open to us.

Honor and what dignity is are somewhat similar. They establish the criteria for a person’s self-respect, as well as the attitude towards his person from society and reflect the moral value of the individual.

Does every person have honor and dignity?

Probably everyone in their life has found themselves in such situations when you experience a feeling of lack of self-esteem and worthlessness. From a legal point of view, the definition of what honor and dignity are assumes that every person is endowed with these qualities at birth. They cannot disappear or disappear during life. The dignity of a person is protected by law; if he is humiliated, the culprit faces punishment.

In fact, it happens that people do not feel worthy and believe that there is nothing to respect them for. Most often, this happens when a person commits one or another act for which he subsequently feels remorse. In such cases they say that honor and dignity are lost.

As a rule, after some time a person makes amends, improves his reputation, and again earns the respect of society. He ceases to consider himself a loser and insignificance and removes this definition from himself. At the same time, honor and dignity return to the person.

How to feel like a worthy person

If for some reason you do not feel like a worthy person, you can make efforts to correct this situation. First of all, you need to stop all attempts at humiliating treatment of yourself by others. Only by learning to position yourself correctly in society can you feel worthy of respect.

It is necessary to constantly replenish your knowledge and skills, improve in your profession and other areas of life. The more valuable you are as a specialist, the higher your self-esteem will be, and therefore your dignity.

To feel your honor and dignity, you must take a responsible approach to fulfilling your duty. This applies not only to debt to the state, but also to specific obligations and assignments undertaken. This includes fulfilling family obligations, taking a responsible attitude toward work assignments, keeping promises, and understanding the significance of one’s words and actions.

“Take care of your dress, but take care of your honor from a young age,” says a Russian proverb. Is honor so important and relevant now?

Honor is not secured by any documents, but an important, valuable feeling. Honor is an important concept, as is justice and integrity. These qualities are welcomed in a person; standards are condemned. But too often in the history of human relationships, honor turns into pathos. Rarely do principles fit all situations; more often than not, you have to make them flexible. Human life is too unstable to drive

Keep yourself within limits. But when your principles are an organic part of the soul, conscience, this is a different matter.

Many writers of the nineteenth century considered honor in their works - in those days the concept of honor was formed especially vividly, imprinted in the history of mankind by duels in defense of honor. In the story “The Captain's Daughter” by Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin main character– Pyotr Grinev was brought up in a high moral environment. Life put him in difficult conditions and tested him. But instead of becoming like the vile Shvabrin, Grinev retained his honor, remained true to himself, and did not drown out the voice of his conscience.

Pushkin's greatest creation, Eugene Onegin, examines life in the 19th century, including duels. Lensky challenged his friend Onegin to a duel due to unreasonable jealousy. Onegin treated the unwanted duel with contempt. He was sincerely saddened by the death of his friend.

In the novel “Hero of Our Time” by Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov, the main character, Pechorin, kills his friend Grushnitsky in a duel. Having stood up for the lady's honor, Grigory Pechorin challenges the offender to a duel. The cowardly Grushnitsky secretly agrees with his seconds to load only his pistol, leaving Pechorin a blank shot. Grushnitsky's immorality and cowardice show that this man has no honor.

In Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy's novel War and Peace, a duel between Pierre Bezukhov and Dolokhov takes place. Pierre Bezukhov is a quiet man, prone to philosophy, but not to aggression or violence. He didn't know how to use a weapon at all. But he wounds the fearless Dolokhov in a duel. In this discrepancy, Tolstoy shows that honesty is sometimes more important than skill in handling weapons, that justice is always restored.

The word “honor” has always been loud and important for people. But honor is really important only when there is something more behind this word than just pathos. Feeling self-esteem should not turn into selfishness. A person who defends honor should not be dominated by emotions and a mind clouded by anger, but by a cold mind. There must be moderation in everything, even in self-esteem, so that this important feeling does not turn into pride and selfishness. But being honest with yourself, it seems to me, is much more important than protecting your honor from attacks. After all, if you cannot be honest with yourself, then how can people be honest with you?

Honor and conscience... In my opinion, these are the most important human virtues. They are the driving force behind personal development. It’s scary to imagine what would happen to people if they did not possess these qualities. But I'll start from the beginning...

Honor has long been considered by our wise ancestors to be the main human quality. Let us remember such a proverb as “Take care of your dress again, but take care of your honor from a young age.” From an early age we are taught to be honest, decent, fair, and this is no coincidence! Honor is not a simple word; it carries with it enormous meaning and an inexplicable feeling. It cannot be taken away, it can only be lost.

Service people, soldiers and officers of the Russian army have always been an example of honesty and decency in our country. Let us remember the story by A.S. Pushkin “The Captain's Daughter”. Important point in the work - the liberation of Masha Mironova with the help of Pugachev. You and I know very well that Pugachev was the leader of the rebels and was not obliged to help Pyotr Andreevich, but he acted according to his conscience. In my opinion, honor and conscience are intertwined with a strong chain. It is impossible to imagine one without the other. After Masha was torn from the monstrous clutches of Shvabrin, Grinev said to Pugachev, the enemy: “But God sees that I would be glad to pay you with my life for what you did for me. Just don’t demand from me what is contrary to my honor and Christian conscience.” These are the cherished words! Having gone through so many trials, the hero did not forget about his duty, his duty to the Fatherland.

Are there such people nowadays?! What is happening now to the honor and conscience of people? At first glance, one can generally argue that these concepts are now outdated and no one needs them. Let us remember, for example, our officials. All people are far from poor, and should not be so by position, however, this is not so important, how much personal funds each person has, what is most interesting is: why and where does the money go that is allocated for various needs of the population, but does not go to them in to the fullest?! And where is the justice here? Where is the conscience and honor of people who, by their duty, are obliged to serve the people?

We can give such examples endlessly, but, dear friends, let’s not forget that our society is not without good people. There are also those who help the poor, work on a voluntary basis, people who sponsor orphanages. And along with the dishonest “units”, about whom there will be no kind words, the names of many real, honest and conscientious people, heroes, such as, for example, Major Sergei Solnechnikov, who saved a recruit soldier at the cost of his own life, will forever be in our memory.

No, these lofty words - “honor” and “conscience” - have not disappeared from our lives! Otherwise humanity would perish!

In conclusion, I will quote a poem by Yulia Olenek, it is very close to me:

That's conscience. Bright understanding.

You saved us from troubles more than once,

You punished us for our misdeeds.

But conscience is not a curse at all.

She dictates morals to people

And the word revenge denigrates.

And I believe that we will not forget her,

Just as we have not forgotten once honor.

She is pure, transparent and innocent,

We have kept it since childhood,

And it’s disgusting for us to lose honor,

Otherwise our life will come to naught.

And if you do not live according to the law:

You don't care about conscience and honor,

And a sense of duty, if unfamiliar,

Then you yourself will understand why you suffered so much...

Many people like to use the word honor, but not everyone is ready to defend it in our time. Cowardice causes dishonor, disrespect, indifference and laziness, forcing us not to defend our interests and the interests of people close to us.
Sometimes it seems to me that men who defend their honor and the honor of their lovers have sunk along with the times of the Middle Ages. It was at this time that men defended the concept of honor and were ready to give their lives for it.
But, to my great happiness, I can still observe men who will never allow them to be dishonored. This gives me hope that our world will be free of hurt, insults and disrespect.

Essay No. 2 Honor and dishonor Complete for grade 11

It's nice to watch people who like to defend their honor, who are not afraid to express their point of view, and are true to their life principles. Honor allows you to be more confident in yourself, to understand what you need from life, what you are ready to fight for and what is really important to you.

There are things that, according to many people, are more important than honor. This is where dishonor comes into play. Money can make people give up their honor, money can make them offend people, be rude, and betray. Many politicians do not defend the interests of the country, many men are not ready to protect their women. All this is a manifestation of dishonor, tactlessness and disrespect. Dishonor also speaks of a person’s lack of conscience. Nowadays, in our time of stress and constant haste, it is easy to insult a person, offend and show disrespect. It is important that such behavior does not go unpunished. It is important to raise children on the principles of upholding honor, their interests and showing respect. It is this kind of education that can get rid of constant negativity, self-interest, and arrogance.

The concept of conscience is inextricably linked with honor. Conscientious people will not deceive, betray, insult or offend a person. Conscience allows you to think about your behavior and the consequences that may arise.

Nurturing in a person such positive qualities how honor begins with the atmosphere in the family. This is exactly what the parents did, their children will do. Therefore, it is extremely important to raise children in a family with a favorable climate, in a family where the honor of the family, country and like-minded people is protected.

A person always decides for himself how to act according to his conscience, or choose the path of dishonor. His moral side is always responsible for his actions and behavior in various life situations.

Essay No. 3 on the topic Honor and dishonor

Today, more than ever, such a concept as honor is important. This happens because now almost all young people are trying to lose this valuable quality and remain a dishonest person. Today, help, respect, and integrity are not valued. Many do not try to protect their honor from a young age, but it turns out that this happens in vain.

Honor has been important at all times. Men considered it a duty of honor to protect their family and their homeland. Women took care of their honor for the sake of their beloved men. The children were raised patriotically. Now all this has faded into the background. Now they beat dogs, insult old people and post it all on the Internet. However, it is worth stopping and thinking about whether such actions are correct. After all, it is better to be an honest and conscientious person than to be dishonest and unprincipled.

It is important to instill in children a sense of self-esteem from early childhood. It is important to teach children to respect other people and love their homeland. It is important to understand that honest a person lives easier and simpler. After all, when your soul is not burdened by dishonest actions, you want to do good, live happily and cheerfully, and not hide from society with the burden of crimes. Therefore, I always choose honest actions and conscientious decisions.

Honor is the true beauty of a person.

Honor is something that no man can give you and no man can take it away from you. Honor is a man's gift to himself.

How often do we say: “What handsome man! What does “beauty” mean? It seems to me that this concept primarily includes internal, spiritual content, when a person lives in harmony with the world around him and himself, does what he loves, realizes his benefit to society, is self-sufficient, he does not need to stupefy himself with alcohol and drugs in order to feel happiness . When a person does not commit incomprehensible acts, does not do what he should not do, when he is fully aware of himself and takes care of his honor.

What is honor? How do we understand this word and do we understand it correctly? Why is honor needed, and does it really exist? To understand this, I think, first of all, it’s worth looking in a dictionary. We open and read: “Honor is the moral qualities and ethnic principles of an individual worthy of respect and pride.” We can agree with this definition. But on my own behalf, I would put a question mark next to the word “pride.” In my opinion, which I do not want to impose on anyone, the words “pride” and “honor” are a little contradictory. That is, honor in my understanding is human dignity, something that everyone has, that cannot be given or taken away, bought or sold. Everyone has honor!

It seems to me that there is an opinion that the concepts of “knight” and “honor” are inseparable. In general, this is correct, since my first association with the word honor is a knight. Why? Because young people who could give their lives for their honor or even kill a person for the honor of their beloved. But, like everything else, the Middle Ages passed, and other times came, completely different, and with them the meaning of honor changed.

Now, when thinking about honor, you think exclusively about honest people. After all, the words honor and honest have the same root. And it’s a pity that honest people are having a hard time now. But there is also a belief that an honest person cannot be rich. When they say about a person that he knows how to live, they usually mean that he is not particularly honest. Why not? Of course, I agree that big money is a test for the soul, for the person himself. Money (especially big money) is not given to everyone, and yet fewer people stand the test of money. Money provokes the development of many negative thoughts and actions in a person. Not for everyone, of course, but for many. But if a person was born into a wealthy family, and wealth is his natural habitat, then he simply has no need to despise others and consider himself better than others. Such a person can have wonderful feelings, such a person can be honest and rich. But such people, unfortunately, are few. There are practically none in our country for obvious reasons.

We live in a time when people who allow themselves to tell the truth can be dealt with. It’s sad, but the 20th century provides terrible examples when people are simply destroyed for what they said or did. Moreover, this happens completely unnoticed, the person either simply disappears, or turns out to be “accidentally” killed, or all the facts indicate that this is suicide. And there are a lot of examples.

In everyday life, it is important for an ordinary person to behave with dignity, that is, to live according to the principles of honor and conscience. It comes to my mind: “Take care of your honor from a young age.” Apparently, this is the most important wish for a person. And the most worthy path in life, however, is also the most difficult. There is another one, easier, simpler. But there is baseness, meanness, dishonor! And if you want to be happy all your life, be an honest person.

IN different countries, y different people honor and dignity have completely different interpretations and meanings. And I really want to hope that someday in the future the concept of honor throughout the world will be the same, uniting in different countries now and those that existed before, but have not reached our time.

And now, having read everything written above, I would like to repeat once again that honor is the true beauty of a person. That without honor a person is not a person. That this is the only thing that can remain with a person, even if everything is taken away from him! After all, as F. Schiller said: “Honor is more valuable than life”!
